Netflix's hit series Wednesday has been renewed for a second season.

The Jenna Ortega-fronted show had a staggering 341.2 million viewing hours in the first week on the platform.

It was released on November 23 and fans were hoping for a second season ever since.

Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said to Tudum : "It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world.

"Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore.

"Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first."

Tim Burton’s new Addams Family spin-off follows the gothic teen Wednesday as she starts boarding school at the infamous Nevermore Academy.

It quickly became a huge hit and ranks at number two on the Most Popular (English) TV list with 1.237 Billion hours viewed within its first 28 days.

Fans were delighted with the news of season two and took to social media to celebrate.

"The best Wednesday news we could hope for on a Friday!," one user said while another added: "As she should! *snaps twice*."

One person posted: "Impatiently waiting…" while one said: "jenna ortega supremacy."

Wednesday also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as the iconic Morticia, Luis Guzmán as her husband Gomez, as well as Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.

Christina Ricci, who played the original Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie, The Addams Family, plays Marilyn Thornhill.

Speaking recently about how much Wednesday is adored by fans and critics alike, Jenna – who also appeared in Netflix drama You – admitted she had no idea the show "would be so popular".

"I didn’t realise it at the time, and maybe that’s me being naive and lame because Tim Burton is attached to it, but I didn’t realise that so many people were going to care about the project," Jenna said when speaking with The Face.

The actress went on to explain that she put a lot of pressure on herself to create her own unique version of the role.

She added: "Christina Ricci is a legend," Jenna said of her Wednesday co-star who played her character in the 90s.

"The character wouldn’t have been as big if it hadn’t been for her performance. I know that I can’t knock anyone off, and I have to do it differently, but the script was also very reminiscent of her, so how can I take this and shift it in my manner?"
