Sergio Aguero might have cemented iconic status at Manchester City but it was Liverpool who the prolific striker craved to join as a youngster.

Indeed, a 10-year-old Aguero has revealed how we was wowed by watching Michael Owen star at Anfield in his teenage years. The ex-England striker would eventually leave for Real Madrid in 2004 having scored 158 times for his boyhood club.

Their careers would overlap slightly, with Owen ironically part of the Manchester United squad left shattered by the famous Aguero goal against QPR which landed City the 2011/12 Premier League title. But he wouldn't have been aware the man who caused the heartbreak tried to imitate him as a youngster.

"I used to like Liverpool when I was younger because of Owen, who had also started as a teenager," he told . "Even when I was playing on my Playstation, I tried to play like Owen!"

Aguero himself joined Argentine club side Independiente when only 15. He would later become an integral part of a City side who endured some epic title battles with Liverpool, with the fixture between the two teams becoming one of the most highly anticipated in English football.

"In my 10 years at City, we've had amazing games with Liverpool," he recalled. "Even more so lately, fighting for the Premier League head to head. I've scored some important goals, but never got to score at Anfield, though."

Aguero had previously been linked with a move to Anfield when in South America, but a transfer never materialised. Instead, it was Atletico Madrid who took a chance on the then 18-year-old in a deal worth over £17million.

And the 35-year-old, forced to retire in December 2021 after being diagnosed with a heart condition, is at a loss to explain why the Merseyside club never came in: "I wouldn't know, really," he admitted. "I've read that they didn't go out for an offer because I was very young and it seemed like a risky bet for the transfer cost."

The five-time Premier League winner will no doubt watch with interest when leaders City and Liverpool go head-to-head in another pivotal clash this Saturday. Just a point separates the sides at the top of the table.
