Sir Cliff Richard sparked a backlash when he appeared on This Morning this week and insulted the memory of late singer Elvis Presley by fat shaming him.

The 83-year-old music legend was appearing on the troubled ITV daytime show to promote the release of his new books. He was grilled by hosts Alison Hammond, Dermot O’Leary and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and the topic of Elvis came up.

Both Sir Cliff and Elvis were on the music scene at the same time - before the King of Rock n Roll died aged 42 in 1977. The hosts asked Sir Cliff if he had ever had the chance to meet Elvis while he was alive.

To the astonishment of the hosts, as well as the viewing public, Sir Cliff said he was once offered the chance to pose for a photo with Elvis, but turned down the proposal because the Hound Dog singer was ‘too fat’. But now it has transpired that an image of the two musician together does exist - in a way..

An image has gone viral on social media showing Sir Cliff at home being interviewed for a TV show. And in the background here is a painting of the singer on stage with Elvis.

An X user shared the snap and wrote: “See, #cliffrichard actually *does* have a painting of him with (thin) #Elvis in his house. A painting that he commissioned despite them never having met. I know this because we recorded a programme there some years back. (I have subtly disguised the producer to save her sanity.)”

They went on to highlight: “Note how Cliff is taking the vocals, while Elvis stands watching in awe.” Others commented on the image to marvel at it, with one writing: “Love that Cliff is shown giving it large and Elvis bloody Presley is just drinking him in.”

ITV viewers were impressed when Alison Hammond called out Sir Cliff for his comments about Elvis’s weight - and his reluctance to be photographer with him. She told the crooner: "Should never have put it off just because they're a little bit heavier."

"If you're a fan of somebody, if you get the chance to meet them, meet them , even if they're put on weight," Cliff urged before Alison asked, "Is that why you don't want me at your house?"

This week, Sir Cliff also took aim at Adele, to criticise her singing skills - with his ire settling on her 2010 song, Rolling In The Deep. He said he loved the song - but he prefers a cover version that Aretha Franklin sang. He said: "Aretha had made it her own. She unleashed that incredible octave range on Rolling in the Deep and completely reimagined it. Aretha’s singing style is totally different from Adele’s.

"I guess I shouldn’t say that her version is better than the original, but what I can safely say is that I enjoy it more, due to a couple of beautiful high notes Aretha threw in. Let’s face it, her voice has forever struck a chord deep inside of me. It always will. I’d like to sing Rolling in the Deep one day. I think it’s a great rock and roll song.”
