A man unleashed a massacre on his family in Florida after uttering some chilling last words just before the attack.

Paul Merhige, a 35-year-old man with a troubled history, entered a cousin's Thanksgiving dinner in Jupiter, Florida, and killed four family members dead.

Merhige had been distant from his family for years but asked to join his family for Thanksgiving festivities. However, this was but a cover for a plan, 20 years in the works that would be fatal for four family members. After joining in with sing-along round the piano, he left his family to retrieve a firearm, a bolt-action Remington 700, from his car.

Eyewitnesses to the tragedy reported that Merhige remained silent until he retrieved the firearm from his car, uttering the chilling words, "I've been waiting 20 years to do this."

He sprayed bullets around the house killing, his 76-year-old aunt, Raymonde Joseph, his 33-year-old twin sisters Carla Merhige and Lisa Knight (who was pregnant), and six-year-old Makayla Sitton, the daughter of his cousin.

The outsider had meticulously pre-mediated this attack, spending $2,000 on firearms and ammunition, as well as withdrawing $12,000 from his bank account in the run-up to reuniting with his family.

Merhige also confided in a salesman, mentioning that he was preparing for a hunting trip, hiding the real reason he was buying the weapons.

The surviving family members were left bewildered, as there were no apparent warning signs or arguments leading up to the incident. However, some family members had reportedly expressed concerns about Merhige's volatile nature, fearing that he might pose a threat.

After carrying out the brutal murders, Merhige fled the scene, spending the $12,000 he had withdrawn to fund a total of five weeks on the run. Law enforcement eventually apprehended him in January 2010 and arrested him. The year following his arrest, Merhige pleaded guilty, opting to avoid the death penalty, and is currently serving seven life sentences behind bars.

There have been a slew of violent Thanksgiving holidays in the years since. Just last year, a trio carried out a terrifying 11-hour, two-state Thanksgiving Day rampage that targeted anyone and everyone they came across, as they travelled through Nevada and Arizona.

Charged with a laundry list of crimes that have put Shawn McDonnell, 31, his brother Christopher McDonnel, 28, and his wife Kayleigh Lewis, 26, away, the criminals left four injured and one 22-year-old man dead. The man, Kevin Mendiola Jr, was murdered at a 7-Eleven in southern Nevada, November 26 2022. His younger brother, girlfriend, and two other people were also hit by gunfire, but all four of the wounded survived.
