A heavily pregnant woman has allegedly died from a suspected scorpion sting in Costa Rica.

Evelyn Vásquez Villalobos, from the city of San Ramón, was at home when she suddenly fell ill. The 37-year-old was nine months pregnant and due to give birth any day.

Emergency services were called to her home by her husband but by the time they arrived at the house in San Ramón, Costa Rica, Evelyn had already died. Sadly, they were also unable to save her unborn child.

Her partner told paramedics and police that she had been stung by a scorpion. It is claimed that Evelyn suffered a severe reaction to the scorpion's venom but police are also investigating a case of murder by her husband, Calvo Rodriguez, 41, as they have reportedly not been able to find any clear bite marks.

The authorities are waiting for the results of an autopsy and her husband has been detained while the police probe continues. Evelyn was found in her kitchen it is claimed by her husband who works in a call centre with the couple having been married for one and half years.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "We cannot say until the investigation is completed but in terms of a bite all we could find was a kind of scratch on her right arm but that was all that my colleague reported. In Costa Rica we have not had cases of scorpions that have poisoned people, these types are not typical in Costa Rica. If someone has an allergy, suffers badly from allergies then it could lead to their airways closing."

A police officer, speaking to the television outlet Repretel, said that there were suspicious signs at the property. “The woman had clothes in a bag which suggested that she wanted to leave the house and this is one of the signs that have led us to think it wasn’t a scorpion bite,” he said.

Meanwhile earlier this month a terrified UK family found a scorpion in their kitchen and believe the critter hitched a ride home from a recent trip to Kenya. Liz Burrows, 50, and husband Ian, 52, arrived home with their 18-year-old daughter Daisy when they encountered the 4cm creature on Sunday. Mum of two Liz spotted it on their kitchen floor and Ian scooped it into a jar.

Liz said: “We'd been out and got home and I went to the fridge and it was just in front of it on the floor. My daughter looked down thinking it was a leaf at first. It then became quite clear it was a scorpion. Its tail was quivering so it was still alive but it wasn't moving much, certainly not enough to send us running out the room. I wanted to get rid of it straight away but my husband thought it was quite interesting and wanted to keep it. I think my neighbours are quite anxious that we have a scorpion in the house.

"It must have hitched a lift with my daughter from Kenya because we've never had a scorpion in the house before. I’m just hoping it doesn’t have any other friends. "I didn't share my husband's excitement. My first instinct was to kill it or dispose of it because of the risk to my family and the dogs. We did some research online and we believe it could be a striped bark scorpion or a pygmy thick tail."
