Matheus Cunha explains why he was "a little bit afraid" of joining Wolves

Matheus Cunha has fallen in love with Molineux since arriving from Atletico Madrid

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha says he initially feared moving to the Black Country but the 24-year-old is now loving life at Molineux after swapping Madrid for the West Midlands.

Brazilian Cunha joined Wolves on loan from Atletico in January before completing a permanent £44m switch in the summer. And having overcome his early culture shock, the striker says he is immersed in the club’s hard-work ethos.

"I'm incredibly happy,” Cunha said. "It was hard to move as Madrid is more like Latin people, similar to Brazilians, and to be honest me and my family were a little bit afraid to come here.

"But the things I saw were incredible. The people here are so lovely with me and my family and the atmosphere in Wolverhampton is amazing. It's not a big city but everyone knows you and supports you. The city lives for the club and they show it at Molineux.

"I'm very happy to be here, very happy to be with this group and very happy to be at this club. And you can see that on the pitch.”

Wolves entered the international break high in confidence thanks to a late comeback win against Tottenham, with Cunha providing the assist for Pablo Sarabia's 90th-minute equaliser before Mario Lemina then stole all three points.

It was a performance that summerd up their never say die attitude under head coach Gary O'Neil and Cunha believes that the team’s battling qualities reflect the fanbase’s blue-collar background.

"We know the history of Wolverhampton and the people here. And we need to fight for them on the pitch,” he added. “We have to put some of our heart into our boots and run like that. We'll show everyone we are here to help the city, help the club and help the family.”

And Cunha, who has found the net twice to date this season, thinks that Wolves must simply perform at that level consistently to bring success.

"We have big games now, we have to continue like this and fight to the end," he said. “We really feel like a family, I feel like a big part of it, the atmosphere was incredible. All we need to do is play well."
