Wrexham have been urged to sign Billy Sharp - despite the Championship icon's heated row with the Welsh club in February.

Sharp, 37, is a free agent after his short-term deal with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy came to an end earlier this month. The forward did well during his time in the United States, scoring six goals in 12 appearances for David Beckham's former club.

Sharp has no plans to retire. Signing the experienced star would be a huge coup for Wrexham, as he's scored 272 career goals. No one has found the net more times in the Championship since the division was rebranded in 2004 than Sharp (130 goals).

Yet Sharp doesn't have the best relationship with Wrexham. He slammed the Welsh club after beating them in the FA Cup with Sheffield United in February for their pre-match comments, with owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney later hitting back.

The row started when Wrexham and United played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Racecourse in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The replay took place at United's Bramall Lane, with the winner facing Tottenham at home in the next round.

Ahead of the replay, Wrexham's social media team called Spurs out on X. Sharp believed that was disrespectful and made his feelings known after scoring in United's 3-1 win against Wrexham in the replay. "I am glad we've beaten them," moaned Sharp.

He added: "I wasn't happy with a few of their players there. The way they've been as a club before the game, eyeing up Spurs before the game - they had not even beaten us."

Reynolds and McElhenney hit back at Sharp in their docuseries, 'Welcome to Wrexham'. McElhenney called Sharp a "motherf*****", while Reynolds said: "We own you (Sharp) right now... we got under his skin... which was so, so wonderful to see."

Although the relationship between Sharp and Wrexham isn't the best, former Premier League star Frank Sinclair believes Reynolds should try to sign the striker. "Wrexham have had back-and-forths with Billy Sharp and he’s obviously back in England looking for a new club," Sinclair, who played for Wrexham during his career, told Stocklytics.

“I’m sure there’s going to be many takers, even at the age he is now, but can you imagine if Billy Sharp ends up going to Wrexham and scores a load of goals to get them promoted! They’d soon be able to get over the problem they’ve had previously!

"The situation was a weird one because Billy Sharp has probably done more in his career than Wrexham have done in their history for a long time."

As Sinclair suggested, signing Sharp could inspire Wrexham to promotion. Phil Parkinson's side are fourth in League Two and level on points with Notts County in third, the final automatic promotion spot. Sharp's firepower could prove to be the difference.
