Coronation Street's newest cobbles arrival and past roles including Netflix hits

Viewers of Coronation Street saw a new face join the residents of Weatherfield this week as actor Sean Cernow joined the cobbles as Ed Bailey's friend Tony.

As yet it remains unknown what part Tony will play in the major storyline that is set to unfold in the coming weeks, bosses have said that he becomes tied up in a web of deceit in Ed's life. But this is not Sean's first time acting in the ITV soap, in 2008 the 46-year-old Manchester born actor played an unnamed drug dealer. And, ten years late,r he returned to play villain Phil Warriner.

Speaking about undertaking his new role, Sean told Manchester Evening News: "I hope people are really going to like Tony, he's dead sweet and lovely. He has a past though and is an old friend of Ed's. At first he thinks, 'brilliant, Ed is helping me to get over the past', but what he doesn't realise is that the saint could actually be the sinner."

He added: "Because I always end up playing the bad guys, I've said in the past I'd love a punch up on the cobbles. Viewers will have to wait and see if that happens with Tony." Sean may appear humble but he has been in a number of huge blockbuster TV series including House of the Dragon on HBO and The Witcher on Netflix, starring alongside Henry Cavil.

But, the actor insisted that nothing beats filming in his hometown of Manchester as he's travelled around Europe filming for both period drama series. He continued: "It's been pretty insane doing House of the Dragon in Portugal and Spain, and then doing The Witcher in London. I have people messaging me from all different corners of the globe wanting to talk about Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon it's wild. You should see some of the DMs I get from fans of The Witcher."

While Sean recalled great moments from fans who want to talk to him about his roles on screen, it wasn't that long ago Sean felt his career may be over, as he was in a "dark place." And dealing with lockdown seemed to make him feel even worse. In his candid chat with the publication he said that he was in a dark place for a very long time and contemplated giving up acting as he was left unsure how he was going to bounce back.

But out of nowhere he said a flurry of job offers poured in. He added: "I never thought in a million years I'd come out of lockdown and I'd work with the people I have done, on shows like House of the Dragon, The Witcher, and most recently I got the second season of Screw. I'm also in a big TV Christmas special too. " But when it comes to starring in Coronation Street he claims that the show has a "cult appeal" that he's sure will outlive everyone in Manchester, as it is so well written.
