Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and that means it's almost time to resurrect one of the most iconic Thanksgiving movies of all time — "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving." And this year is special — it's the 50th anniversary of the historic film, and as a result, many places are offering free ways to watch it.

The 30-minute short was first released in 1973 on November 20. It follows the story of Charlie Brown and his friends, as most other "Peanuts"-themed films do. This time, unsurprisingly, Peppermint Patty invites herself to a Brown family function, sparking a plot full of drama as Charlie decides how to handle the invite.

The story follows how he figures out the dilemma and features a Thanksgiving feast with family and another with friends, American football and lots of Snoopy, the fan-favourite dog. It's a Thanksgiving classic.

But how can you watch the film for free this year? The answer lies in the history of the film and the channels that have carried it over the years and where it eventually ended up.

CBS was the first channel to carry the show, and the year after it premiered, it won an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Special, according to IMDb and TODAY.com. Then, it was acquired by ABC in 2001 before it landed on Apple TV+'s plate in 2018. The network has maintained the rights to the short for the past five years. On all the networks it's been featured on, the special has been aired annually.

It's by going to Apple TV+ that prospective viewers can see the film for free, but only for two days — November 18 and November 19, the Saturday and Sunday before Thanksgiving. Subscribers can also view the other Peanuts specials, including "It's the Great Pumpkin," Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Apple TV+ subscriptions cost $9.99 (£8.02). The platform also features a free seven-day trial for those wishing to try it out without committing yet.

Peanuts was created by Charles M. Schulz, who was born in 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had always wanted to publish cartoons, and he wrote Li'l Folks in his 20s, which was published in a local newspaper. He had realised his dream. That cartoon was later turned into Peanuts and went national.

His comic was turned into a TV special in 1965 with "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and The New York Times reported that it garnered over 15 million viewers during the premiere.
