American porn star Ron Jeremy has been released to a "private residence" due to his declining health, just months after he was declared incompetent to stand trial.

The 70-year-old was declared unfit for trial after the former adult film star was charged with 30 counts of rape and sexual assault relating to 20 women. Back in January, prosecutors wrote to complainants telling them mental health experts had examined Jeremy and diagnosed him with "severe dementia".

The experts concluded he was not competent to stand trial because they do not believe he has the ability to understand the nature of the criminal proceedings or assist in the presentation of a defence. Jeremy had been in the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles, but has now been moved to an unnamed institution after it was claimed "no medical facility will take him".

LA County Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson apologised to Jeremy's alleged victims via email on Friday. He said he was sorry he was "unable to get complete justice" for them due to the actor's decline in health. Thompson said Jeremy is "essentially bedridden".

Thompson's email, which was seen by the Los Angeles Times, said a judge granted a request to release Jeremy on Friday. He will now receive "round-the-clock medical care".

Jeremy's lawyers had allegedly filed a motion for his complete release which had been overruled on public safety grounds, the email said. "I feel very badly that this is where we are, but it is beyond our control. His mental and physical condition deteriorated rapidly, and we are left with no other options. I'm sorry that we couldn't get complete justice for you in court," Thompson wrote.

Stu Goldfarb, Jeremey's lawyer, told the Los Angeles Times he didn't know exactly what type of "private residence" his client would be released to. He also said he is unsure of what security measures the facility will have.

Proceedings were halted against Jeremy in March last year, when his attorney said the adult film star no longer recognised him. In January, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Harris formally declared Jeremy unfit to stand trial. He said the actor was "incoherent" due to "incurable neurocognitive decline".
