An angry mum who was "led to believe her son had an iron deficiency or some kind of infection" has told how she "froze" when it turned out to be cancer.

Jayden Cookson, three, is now undergoing chemotherapy after it was eventually found that he had a tumour on his kidney and his mum Demi Bourne, from Grimsby, says she "feels let down" that it was not discovered sooner.

Demi took her son to hospital after she found blood in his nappies and she was told it was a water infection. She was sent home but just a few days later, the problem occurred again.

Returning to Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, in Grimsby, Jayden was admitted onto the Rainforest Ward where a number of blood and urine samples were taken and the pair were sent home once more. Demi was told her son had a low iron count, but that there was nothing to worry about.

But a couple of weeks later, blood appeared in Jayden's nappies again and Demi took him straight to A&E where she was told the Rainforest Ward should have conducted an ultrasound. After another wait of several hours, another urine sample was taken. To her shock, it was bright red with blood. Staff told Demi her son had been booked in for an ultrasound and they were sent home yet again.

Demi told GrimsbyLive: "I phoned them up a couple of days later to see what was happening and they told me that one hadn't been booked. We were told to go back to the Rainforest Ward to sort it, but ended up sat there for three or four hours because we didn't have a scheduled appointment."

Tragically, the ultrasound showed a suspected cancer on Jayden's kidney and the next day at Sheffield Children's Hospital the news was confirmed. "When they told me he had cancer, I just froze. I was led to believe it was some sort of infection or problem with his iron levels, I really didn't think it would turn out to be cancer," said Demi.

"I just sat there crying and couldn't believe what I was being told. I don't understand why this wasn't found sooner, I'm heart broken." She added: "What angers me most is that if he hadn't kept bleeding this may never have been found. There could have been a point where he went to sleep and never woke up. I just feel so left down by the hospital, I feel like I wasn't given any proper answers."

Now, Jayden is undergoing four weeks of chemotherapy before having the kidney removed to see how much more treatment he needs. Demi is scared about what the future holds: "I worry about what's next. It's hard seeing him struggle when they are putting the cannulas in, I just wish I could take it off him."

A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS said an investigation was ongoing. They said: "We are aware of the concerns raised by this patient's mother and we are fully investigating them."
