When it comes to buying electrical goods, there are some items that I think are well worth investing in, and a high quality toothbrush is one of them. After all, the average person brushes their teeth around 730 times a year, so it's an important purchase and you'll want to make the right one.

Getting yourself a well-rated device means you're looking after your teeth in the best possible way, maintaining good oral health, which in turn will save you money on dentist appointments, and help to achieve a sparkling smile that you won't want to hide.

I've tested a fair few electric toothbrushes in my time, ranging from less than £50 to over £500, and the one that came out top was the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Prestige 9900. It will usually set you back £549.99, but as part of the Amazon Black Friday week sale, they've reduced it by 59% - saving shoppers a whopping £325.

There are several aspects to the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Prestige 9900 that reign it supreme in my eyes, with the first being just how clean it left my teeth feeling after use. Arguably top of the list of factors you want your toothbrush to achieve, the sonic technology pulses water between your teeth while brushing, breaking down any tricky to get to grime, and giving a professional feeling clean.

It has a pressure monitor, letting you know when you're brushing too hard, and then adapting its intensity to suit this. Although this isn't an uncommon feature in newer devices - the Oral-B Pro 3 Series has this too and it's been slashed to £34.99 from £100 in the Amazon Black Friday sale, the Philips toothbrush also has a clever app that gives you even more information, such as which exact areas require more attention.

I also adore how the Philips electric toothbrush looks - it's available in champagne or midnight and when placed on your bathroom side it has such a luxury feel to it. The travel case it comes with is slim and stylish, making it incredibly easy to travel with, paired with the fact it has an impressive battery life, and it's ideal for those always on the go.

Shoppers are also big fans of the Philips device, with one person hailing it, "probably the best electric toothbrush in the world." They then went on to explain why, saying: "My dentist always compliments me on my oral hygiene so much so that at 57 years of age I have yet had to see a hygienist because, as my dentist can confirm my teeth are virtually plaque free. I attribute this solely to my Sonicare toothbrush."

Another user said: "My first use of the toothbrush felt like I’d been to the the hygienist, it cleans that well. It looks expensive and like a quality product, it feels lovely to use and has a great travel case. The app although a bit of a gimmick has some neat features like identifying areas you don’t clean as well or if you press to hard. The battery seems to last for over two weeks, and unlike another reviewer I confirm it alerts you before it goes flat."

It has been noted that "annoyingly you only get one toothbrush head in this pack," but you can buy spares here.

That's not to say that cheaper alternatives won't do the job - I also highly rate Spotlight Oral Care and their Sonic Toothbrush. It's been reduced by 40% to £66 as part of the brand's Black Friday sale, and you can get an extra 10% off using the code SOC10.

For a sustainable toothbrush that will protect the planet as well as your teeth, you can now save £18.75 off the SURI Electric Toothbrush at Boots. Or, if you're looking to replace brush heads, Amazon have 47% off the Oral-B Precision Clean Brush Heads, which are compatible with all Oral-B devices.
