Children in Need is back and is raising millions of pounds for kids across the UK.

The annual fundraising event launched by the BBC helps to ensure every child can thrive and be the best they can be. Celebrities have already got stuck in with fundraising event, with BBC Radio 2 host Vernon Kay completing an ultra marathon for the cause. The TV and radio star ran 115 miles from Leicester all the way to his hometown of Bolton.

His four day run has seen him raise £4,014,362. Upon finishing his race, he declared: “That’s made it all worthwhile. The pain has lessened! I can’t thank everyone enough. We’ve heard some heartfelt stories and it’s been an emotional rollercoaster but it’s been blimin’ worth it.”

How do I donate?

There are many ways to raise money for Children in Need, including walkathons, sponsored cycles, bake sales among many more. The BBC also hosts a Children in Need show filled with famous faces, SPOTacular programmes, and reports from children and young people whose lives have been changed thanks to your support.

People across the country have been fundraising for weeks and it all culminates with the annual BBC Children in Need Appeal Show live on BBC One on November 17. There will be a chance to donate during the show through a text donation. You can also donate online at donate.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk.

You will be given the chance to donate £30 that could pay for a food parcel for 6 children affected by poverty, ensuring they can access healthy food, improving their physical and emotional wellbeing. You can opt to pay £50 that could pay for a one-to-one counselling session with a counsellor for an 8-year-old girl whose Mum has died helping her to communicate how she feels and learn to cope.

While a £100 donation could pay for a week of after school club sessions for 15 children and young people affected by mental health issues providing a safe space and enabling them to build confidence. You are also given the chance to choose your own amount to donate. Visit the website here.

What happens in the live show?

Live from MediaCityUK in Salford, Children in Need will return with its three hour spectacle in a bid to entertain the nation all whilst raising money for young people across the UK. There will be a whole host of entertainment including a special Doctor Who sketch featuring returning Doctor David Tennant, whilst there will be big performances from the likes of Leigh-Anne Pinnock.

The Children in Need challengers - a group of inspirational young people - will be front of centre of the show, with two of them giving performances on the night with the help of some very famous faces. Vernon Kay will also find out the total he has raised as part of the Ultra marathon he took on with Radio 2, whilst there will be a Race Across Yorkshire special.

For the Race Across Yorkshire special, EastEnders' Ian and Cindy Beale (Adam Woodyatt and Michelle Collins), Birds of a Feather’s Dorien and Tracey (Lesley Joseph and Linda Robson) and Waterloo Road's Noel and Samia (Liam Scholes and Priyasasha Kumari) will take on a special parody challenge to find their way to Pudsey. Along the way the teams will bump into some big Yorkshire icons including Emmerdale’s Kim Tate, Marlon Dingle and Cain Dingle, Bradford’s very own Gareth Gates, Wakefield’s Jane McDonald and one half of Rotherham’s Chuckle Brothers, Paul Chuckle. The programme will end with the final grand total of money raised being declared.

How much was raised last year?

Children in Need 2022 raised more than £35million for charitable causes. As the show closed, it was announced £35,273,167 and counting had been raised as the nation dug deep despite the cost-of-living crisis. The efforts followed the 2021 Appeal show raising a whopping £39,389,048 during the charity’s 41st Appeal show, as the Great British public dug even deeper into their pockets.
