Chelsea captain Reece James has visited a fan in hospital after they suffered a heart attack during the thrilling draw with Manchester City.

The Blues played out a barnstorming 4-4 draw with the reigning champions, with Cole Palmer scoring a stoppage-time penalty to claim a point. James started the game at right-back, playing 64 minutes and laying on the assist for Raheem Sterling's first-half goal.

Following the final whistle, he found out a supporter had been taken to hospital after a medical emergency during the match. On Thursday night, the Chelsea skipper made the classy gesture of visiting the fan as the Premier League entered an international break.

James announced his visit through his Instagram stories, posting a statement and then a picture of himself with the supporter. And he revealed his happiness that the fan was recovering well.

"I visited a hospital this evening to see a Chelsea fan that had a heart attack at our game against Man City. He was dead for 20 minutes and the medics managed to save his life," he wrote on his Instagram story.

"Be kind and always show love. You never know what people are going through our what is round the corner. Stay well and see you soon. Reece."

The draw with City was James' second start in succession, having missed a large chunk of the season with a hamstring injury. That injury meant that he did not make himself available for selection for England, with Gareth Southgate warning that may hurt his chances for Euro 2024.

There is only one more international break before that tournament, with James at risk of falling behind his rivals for a place. But Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino insisted he is not concerned.

“It’s never the decision of the player in these cases; it’s about to assess. The medical, sport science and coaching staff take the decisions and not the players. The players can't assess themselves," Pochettino said.

"They may sometimes feel something but he's desperate to go the national team. I think it is good the communication between the national team and club to take the best decision for both.

"It is not the decision of Reece, he is desperate to go, he wanted to go. But there are two parts between the national team and club to take the best decision for him. He is fit again and I am happy to work with him. He will have the chance to shine with the national team again.”
