Police are appealing for information after a man grabbed a woman and pushed her towards the tracks at a busy London Underground station.

British Transport Police (BTP) has opened an attempted murder investigation following the horror at Leicester Square station at around 3.30pm on Monday November 6.The force says it was called to reports of a man attempting to push a woman in front of an incoming train.

Two have-a-go heroes intervened and pulled her away from him, BTP added today. Officers now want to talk to anyone who saw the incident, and talk to those passengers who intervened.

It is believed the suspect had argued with an elderly man on the platform moments before he turned on the woman. A spokesperson for BTP said: "Detectives are appealing for witnesses following the attempted murder of a woman at Leicester Square station last week.

"Officers were called to the station shortly after 15:30pm on Monday, 6 November following reports of a man attempting to push a woman in front of an incoming train.

"It was reported that the victim was waiting on the platform at the station when she saw the suspect arguing with an elderly man. The suspect then walked over, grabbed her arm, and began dragging her. She managed to briefly get away.

"As the train approached, the suspect then grabbed the victim’s arm again and began pushing her towards the tracks. Two other passengers intervened and pulled her away from him. The suspect is then reported to have boarded the train.

"The suspect is described as a male believed to be in his late 20’s with a muscular build, wearing a beige scarf over his head and a short puffer jacket. If you were one of the people who intervened, or someone who witnessed the incident, please contact British Transport Police as soon as possible.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 455 of 06/11/2023. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
