Freddie Flintoff has admitted he is "relishing" the opportunity after being appointed as the new head coach of Northern Superchargers men's team in The Hundred.

It's the 45-year-old's first head coach role and he will take charge of the side through the competition next August. Flintoff has replaced ex-Essex wicketkeeper James Foster after Northern Superchargers endured a torrid 2023 and finished bottom of the table, winning just two of their eight matches.

Flintoff's appointment comes 11 months on from his horrific crash while filming for Top Gear. Last December, Flintoff suffered facial injuries and broken ribs in the accident at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey, where he had been driving an open-topped three-wheel Morgan Super 3 at 130mph.

He was part of England's coaching team for the white-ball series against New Zealand in September, and will work with the second-string Lions side in Asia this winter. However, Flintoff has now landed a domestic role with the Northern Superchargers, who play their home matches at Headingley.

Speaking after being appointed, Flintoff said: "I am excited to have been appointed Head Coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team. Big thanks to Kirsty and Marcus for trusting me with the team.

"My time with the England Men’s team has been a reminder of just how special cricket is to me, and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back amongst it, helping to guide the Superchargers team to success on the field while making memories off it and helping to take cricket to more people.

"The Superchargers have a great fan base who I cannot wait to meet and bring along with us this season. I'm looking forward to making Headingley my new home."

Northern Superchargers Chair Kirsty Bashforth said: "We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to the Northern Superchargers family. He is an inspirational figure who has huge respect across the game of cricket and he is someone we know will excite our players, coaches, and our fans.

"Andrew will help us to create a unique culture and we are extremely excited about working with him to inspire our squad further with positive, entertaining and consistently winning cricket."

Flintoff is recognised as one of England's greatest-ever cricketers, having taken 226 wickets in 79 Tests throughout his career. He also scored 3,845 runs at an average of just under 32.
