Conor Gallagher is confident he will secure his long-term Chelsea future, after cementing his place for both club and country.

England midfielder Gallagher, 23, admitted at the time he was “surprised” to even get the call for Qatar last year but is now a fixture for club and country. Gallagher is favourite to start against Malta at Wembley on Friday night while also starting every Premier League game for Chelsea this season.

That is down to his incredible spirit and never-say-die attitude which was underlined by his battling display in Sunday’s eight goal thriller with Manchester City. It sent a message to anyone that if you did not realise how important Gallagher was before then you certainly do now and it is a confidence which has also transmitted to the player.

Gallagher said: “Coming here, I feel more relaxed, more into the squad and hopefully I can start to play more for England and be a bigger part of the squad. Obviously, playing every game so far with Chelsea this season and doing well really helps with my confidence and I think you can see that on the pitch and I'll always give my best for Chelsea and for England.

“After the World Cup squad was announced, I wasn't playing much for Chelsea and we were going through a tough period, so that's why I said that in an interview. But I'm very confident in my ability and what I can do. Training and playing alongside midfielders worth 100 plus million pounds is good and shows where I'm at as well. So hopefully I can continue to perform well to keep playing as many games as I can.”

Gallagher is a warrior who was sent out on loan to four different clubs, worked his way up through the England age groups and has even been given the armband this season by Mauricio Pochettino when captain Reece James and Ben Chilwell have been out.

He grew up as the youngest of four footballing brothers, was stuck in goal in the back garden as a kid but it has taught him to really fight for his place. There was also plenty of interest in him in the last transfer window but he never wanted to leave.

Gallagher has 18 months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, wants to stay and is a huge Chelsea fan who grew up idolising John Terry and Frank Lampard before being managed by the latter. He added: “I’m sure that will get sorted out, everyone knows Chelsea is my club and I love playing for them. The fans are brilliant and I’m loving right now and I’m sure it will get itself sorted out.

“It was a crazy period in terms of ins and outs at Chelsea in the summer and I had conversations with the manager and he expressed that he liked me as a player and I was in his plans and I was really happy with that.

"Of course, John and Frank (Lampard) those two guys I've looked up to growing up being a Chelsea fan and obviously them both being two Chelsea legends. They understand how it is to play for the club and what the club expects.

“Probably more so Frank because he was my manager last season and I spoke with him more and he's helped me a lot so I've been very lucky to be able to speak to those guys.”
