Princess Diana's last words to William and Harry to move The Crown fans to tears

The poignant final conversation between Princess Diana and her beloved sons William and Harry will have viewers reaching for the tissues as The Crown begins its final series this week.

In the third episode of the sixth and final series, Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, is seen to be growing increasingly agitated over missing “the boys” while in France, and wishing she was back in England with them. She is devastated when interference from her new boyfriend Dodi’s father - Mohammed Al Fayed - means she misses a planned phone call with them while she is in Paris and her sons are with the royals at Balmoral, Scotland.

When she finally does speak them later that day, viewers will realise that it is to be her last interaction with the sons she adored. When they wonder if she is still with “the poser” who likes to wear “moccasins” she laughs that she is.

But when they gather up the courage to ask if the rumour about them getting married is true, she tells them quite emphatically: “I am not going to marry Dodi. I can’t wait to come home - it’s bit mad here. Mummy just needs to make some changes to her life, that’s all.” In the touchingly emotional scene she tells her sons: “I’ll see you both tomorrow night. Just the three of us.” As Harry tells his mother he loves her, she replies: “I love you too darling.” And when William says the same, she tells him: “I love you Wombat,” and blows them both kisses.

Afterwards she tells Dodi that she intends to focus more on her sons. “It’s motherhood that’s consistently made my happiest,” she tells him. “I need to spend more time with my children.” Dodi, played by Khalid Abdalla, is also seen proposing to a horrified Diana in Paris - and being turned down. It comes after his controlling father (played by Salim Daw) tells him he will make him a full partner in his company if he can just “close her and put a ring on her finger”.

The pressure of this is what causes the couple to detour from their holiday in the south of France via Paris, after Diana makes it clear she just wants to get back to London. “There’s something I have to do,” Dodi tells her. "It’s just one night."

But once there they are swarmed by people and paparazzi and Diana is so overcome she bursts into tears in the restaurant at The Ritz. After Diana tells Dodi in no uncertain terms that he needs to cut ties with his father or face never being happy, the couple agree to go back to his apartment.

Having sent decoy cars out the front of the Ritz, they exit for their car with driver Henri Paul and Diana’s bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, holding hands together on the backseat. As he prepares to drive away Paul, who has been drinking in the bar all evening, chillingly tells the photographers on mopeds: “Don’t try following us. You’ll never catch us.” Viewers see only the speeding black Mercedes as it accelerates into the tunnel - the screen fades to black as the sound of screeching tyres followed by the crash is heard.

* The Crown series six, Part 1, is released on Netflix on Thursday.
