A 1000km-wide storm could soon bring heavy snow and torrential downpours to the UK, according to new forecasts.

Weather maps from WXCharts show a wintry blast on its way over the Atlantic, threatening to fall across parts of the country in a matter of days.

As much as three centimetres of snow per hour could fall over higher ground, the charts say, while one centimetre of rain per hour is expected to hit western regions.

Temperatures will also drop to around freezing in many places, with chilly overnight lows, while areas in the north will be the worst affected by the snow.

The storm is expected to come in from the west, arriving in the UK on Saturday, November 18, reports Birmingham Live. Areas which could see the most snowfall include Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as the north east of England. Temperatures could dip to as low was 0C in Scotland, while data from WXCharts suggests there could be lows of 1C or 2C in other parts of the country.

Netweather forecaster Ian Simpson said the weather for the week ahead would continue to be 'unsettled', thanks to a low pressure system centred on the north-west of the British Isles'. Snow will be "generally restricted to high ground", while north-western parts of the UK will be wettest, he said.

Exacta Weather forecaster Madden meanwhile wrote: "Conditions do appear extremely favourable for a number of more potent wintry blasts to occur throughout January and into February, and these could turn out to be quite prolonged in nature, and for at least a week or two at a time. Widespread snowy conditions are also likely to accompany these wintry blasts and put us in a winter wonderland on a number of occasions." .

The Met Office has also issued two amber wind warnings for parts of Northern Ireland and northwest England on Monday, with strong gales from Storm Debi expected to bring disruption. Matthew Lehnert, a Chief Meteorologist with the Met Office, said: "Storm Debi has developed rapidly overnight and will bring impacts across parts of the UK today. Because of the particular risk of impacts to parts of County Armagh and County Down this morning and parts of northwest England through much of the day we have issued two amber wind warnings."
