Jose Mourinho has slammed former Chelsea star Pedro by claiming he is a ‘born diver’.

The Portuguese led Roma against fierce cross-city rivals Lazio on Sunday evening as he attempted to end his side’s inconsistent start to the season. However, they could only claim a point after a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

While there were no goals, there were still plenty of talking points - particularly from Mourinho’s post-match assessment. He took aim at Spanish winger Pedro, who he believed was attempting to deceive the referee.

Speaking after Sunday’s draw, Mourinho said: “I didn’t want to leave [Gianluca] Mancini alone with Pedro. I needed [Rick] Karsdorp to stay and help him. Pedro is a fantastic player but he is a born diver, an excellent swimmer, he dives into the pool just beautifully.”

Mourinho’s comments did not go down particularly well with those of a Lazio persuasion. Midfielder Danilo Cataldi replied to the Roma head coach in brutal style and was left somewhat disappointed that his side weren’t able to earn victory.

He said: “He’s always the first one to talk about titles. Well, Pedro has won more titles than him. The match? It’s always difficult for me to prepare for the derby, it’s so special. We all know what it means for me and for the fans.”

“Today we failed to score, Rui Patricio performed a miracle, then there was the post and other opportunities. If we look at the full 90 minutes we played a good game.”

Mourinho’s comments about Pedro are not the first time that the pair have not seen eye-to-eye. The Portuguese actually signed the winger from Barcelona during his second spell at Chelsea but was only at Stamford Bridge a matter of months before he was sacked.

Opening up on the reasons behind Chelsea’s poor start to the 2015/16 season, Pedro revealed: "It was about everything, everything just wasn’t right. We were very low in the league, the spirits were very low, the trust was very low, everything was going wrong. It made it very difficult to be fit, to be in a good position. It was just the whole thing – it wasn’t right."

The pair’s relationship did not appear to get any better in Italy. Pedro was fresh off the back of his first season with Roma having scored six goals in 40 appearances in all competitions.

However, Mourinho let him leave the club after being appointed as their new manager and brutally told the winger that he was no longer wanted at the Stadio Olimpico. While Pedro went on to leave Roma, he actually stayed in the Italian capital by signing for rivals Lazio.

The now 36-year-old has gone on to make just under 100 appearances for the Italian giants and has scored 18 goals.
