'Suella Braverman has no credibility or authority left to do her most vital job'
Remembrance weekend is an important time for communities to come together to reflect on the sacrifices that keep our country safe and to show respect to one another.
That is what millions of us did at the two minute silence yesterday in towns and cities and will do again at Remembrance Services today. But the scenes we saw around Whitehall yesterday, with far-right groups and supporters throwing missiles at the police, fighting, shouting and trying to get down to the Cenotaph during Armistice events were a total disgrace.
We also saw appalling examples of antisemitism, intimidation and support for Hamas on London streets which we condemn in the strongest terms. Those responsible for violence and hate crimes must face the full force of the law and the police will have all our support in doing so.
But instead of working with the police in the run up to this weekend, the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman deliberately chose to attack the them and inflame tensions in the most irresponsible way. I warned her that what she was doing was dangerous and would encourage extremists to exploit the situation.
No other Home Secretary would ever have done what Suella Braverman did – whipping up hostility to the police and deliberately promoting division around Remembrance Day. The events around the Armistice yesterday make it clear why.

The job of the police is to keep order and enforce the law. The job of the Home Secretary is to support them and to bring communities together. Suella Braverman has no remaining credibility or authority to do that vital job. A Home Secretary who doesn’t take seriously the security of our streets is only allowed to stay in post because the Government has given up on governing and is letting our nation down.
