Kieran Trippier had to be pulled back by Joelinton after he became embroiled in a fiery altercation with a Newcastle fan after their 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

Dominic Solanke was at the double - scoring once in either half - as the Cherries piled more misery on Eddie Howe's injury-ravaged side as tensions threatened to boil over following the full-time whistle.

Newcastle's players went over to applaud the travelling faithful but it appears Trippier became angered by something that was said by one fan in particular. So much so, Joelinton was forced to intervene before Howe later consoled his hurting full-back, who was still emotionally-charged.

In footage that his since surfaced on social media, the former Tottenham and Atletico Madrid man could be heard shouting: "How many injuries have we got?"

Speaking after the match to Sky Sports, Trippier said of the incident: "The fans are emotional, of course they are. They have travelled a long way, they spend a lot of money to come and watch us.

"I was just having a chat with one of them, I said we are giving everything. There is no need to panic, we are still in a good position in the league, we are still in the Champions League, Carabao Cup quarter-finals, there is no need to panic. We got beat, we do apologise for that result, but the most important thing is that the lads are giving everything. We are giving more under the circumstances."

Howe also added: "Kieran's fine. Emotions run high. We all feel a bit emotional after that. No problems with our away support."

The heated incident capped a frustrating afternoon for Newcastle just days after their 2-0 Champions League disappointment at Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

Solanke struck twice in either half to ease the pressure on under-fire boss Andoni Iraola as his side recorded just their second Premier League victory of the season to move three points clear of the relegation zone.

And just when you began to think Newcastle's incredible availability crisis couldn't get any worse - it plunged to new depths of despair.

Miguel Almiron was forced off with a hamstring issue while Fabian Schar battled on through a similar problem despite requiring early medical treatment. Then Sean Longstaff, who also soldiered on to his credit, endured a nasty-looking ankle knock which will likely be subjected to swelling.

Eddie Howe was already without 11 players for this meeting - nine of which were injured - including Callum Wilson.

Anthony Gordon and Joelinton interchanged as makeshift solutions at centre-forward while there was a first Premier League start for Newcastle's 17-year-old midfield talent Lewis Miley.

He did not look out of place in the absence of suspended maestro Bruno Guimaraes as the highly-rated teenager became Newcastle's youngest-ever player to feature in the top-flight before being replaced by another debutant in 18-year-old Ben Parkinson.

Bournemouth were quick to test injury-hit Newcastle's defensive resolve and they smelt blood from the get-go. First Ryan Christie forced an awkward save from Nick Pope before Antoine Semenyo danced his way through the Magpies' backline before striking at goal.

Up the other end, returning Cherries goalkeeper Neto was equal to a dipping long-range effort from Sean Longstaff that was hit with considerable venom but it was the hosts that continued to probe.

Solanke squandered a glorious opening when he hesitated inside the box - prompting a heroic last-ditch slide tackle from Jamaal Lascelles. Pope made five notable first-half stops as Justin Kluivert and Christie were next to pepper his goal.

Bournemouth's determined spirit was eventually rewarded on the hour mark when Solanke displayed cunning offensive instinct to collect Joe Willock's awkward interception before firing home with aplomb.

Willock initially thought he'd robbed Semenyo of possession - only for his half-hearted tackle to roll into the path of the predatory Solanke.

Trippier's in-swinging free-kick quickly provided a timely reminder that Newcastle were not prepared to give up the points without a fight as Neto made a smart double stop at his near post.

Depleted boss Howe buried his head in his hands as Longstaff was left writhing around in pain following a turn of his ankle. Thankfully for Newcastle, it was not as serious as first feared but things would soon go from bad to worse for the visitors.

Marcus Tavernier let fly from distance as Pope tipped the ball around the post but from the resulting corner, Solanke doubled his tally. First Luis Sinisterra's header cannoned off the post, bouncing kindly across the face of the six-yard box for Solanke to eventually flick home. VAR tried its best to spoil Bournemouth's fun but the goal - their first from a set-piece all season - stood despite checks for handball.

The hosts would have had a well-deserved third in stoppage-time had it not been for a stunning save from Pope to deny Sinisterra.
