Arsenal's Vieira slammed over 'stupid' red card after horror tackle vs Burnley

Fabio Vieira was subjected to a barrage of criticism on social media after he saw red in Arsenal's comprehensive 3-1 win over Burnley.

The Gunners maintained their impressive start to the 2023/24 campaign by putting Vincent Kompany's side to the sword at the Emirates with Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko all on target. Josh Brownhill found the net for the visitors but it was Vieira's late dismissal which marred an otherwise positive day for Arsenal.

The Portuguese midfielder was only introduced from the bench on the hour mark by Mikel Arteta but he was sent off by referee Michael Oliver for a high challenge in the 83rd minute - and fans were quick to vent their frustrations on social media.

One Arsenal fan branded the challenge "stupid", posting: "Cannot complain about that. It’s a straight red all day. So stupid from Vieira." Another echoed similar sentiments, saying: "That is a red. So silly from Fabio Vieira."

Other fans branded Vieira a "liability" for the "reckless" challenge which meant Arsenal had to see the final stages of the match out with 10 men. While another social media poster slammed Vieira for making a "silly" challenge, they took aim at Brownhill's reaction, posting: "That was silly from Vieira but Brownhill is such a diva for that."

Vieira's dismissal means the Arsenal maestro will miss the next three Premier League fixtures after the international break - meaning fans won't see him in domestic action until December.

While Vieira's late dismissal may have soured the afternoon, the result means Arsenal head into the international break in second place level on points with Manchester City, although the champions do have a game-in-hand on their title rivals.

Arteta made headlines last week when he slammed the standard of officiating after VAR allowed Anthony Gordon's controversial winning goal to stand in the 1-0 loss at Newcastle.

The Spaniard made it clear, though, that he had no complaints with any of the officiating against Burnley - including Vieira's dismissal. He told reporters after the match: "The red card. VAR was right. The referee was right. Good decision."
