Little in life can match up to the joy of a homemade cake on your birthday, but one step-mother has left the internet divided after her own cake was the centre of a drama at her daughter's 12th birthday, leading her to leave the party altogether.

The step-mum explained that she had tried to make a cake for her 12-year-old step-daughter to show her some "support" after her mother had passed away, even making sure she had chosen her favourite flavour. But after not being able to source the special ingredient - blueberries - she was left devastated when her husband threw the cake away.

In a post on Reddit, she explained that her husband Jeff - who was "struggling as a single parent" - would buy his daughter a cake from a bakery every year. This year, she wanted to make her a homemade treat to "show some motherly love and support".

She explained that her step-daughter's favourite flavour is blueberry, but she couldn't include them "because I went to the nearest store and they didn't have them." The anonymous woman added: "I was running out of time and couldn't get them so I ended up just leaving the cake… thinking it wouldn't be a big deal." But when Jeff saw that there were no blueberries on the top, he accused her of not "fully committing" to making the birthday cake, and that he "should have just ordered one from the bakery".

"We got into an argument and he ended up taking it and throwing it in the trash can," she said. "I was stunned as he said 'forget it, I'll get one from the bakery'. I blew up and screamed at him, he told me to stop but I went upstairs, got dressed and left. He tried getting me to stay but I refused and went to my parents. He later called and then texted about how I overreacted and hurt him and my stepdaughter by leaving… My parents say he was justified since he must've felt pressured from the stress of making his daughter happy on her birthday."

She asked commenters if she was in the wrong for leaving the party when she did, with many firmly standing on her side. "He went nuclear and threw out your cake?!" one commenter said. "Yeah, I wouldn't have stayed around after that either. It is a childish, vindictive, aggressive, and hurtful way to deal with what he saw as a less-than-perfect situation. He seems extremely overprotective of his daughter. She's 12 and would probably love this cake even if it didn't have blueberries."

Some explained, however, that her husband may have had the reaction he did due to going through the loss of his partner, and the stress of planning a birthday party for his child. "As you said, his daughter's [mum] is deceased, and he feels that he is the parent responsible for making the daughter happy. There is a lot more emotional investment than whether or not there were blueberries. Regardless, I wish he could have reacted more calmly despite whatever emotions he was feeling," one user wrote.
