Apple TV+ has unveiled the first-look trailer for its upcoming World War II drama, Masters of the Air. The limited series is an action-packed drama that follows the true story of an American bomber group.

It reunites producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the award-winning team behind Band of Brothers and The Pacific. The drama also features a stellar cast led by Oscar-nominated Elvis actor Austin Butler, starring alongside Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and soon-to-be Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa.

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group – the “Bloody Hundredth – as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany. The airmen grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.

Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich is at the heart of the series. Some were shot down and captured, some were wounded or killed and some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

The series takes place in locations ranging from the fields and villages of southeast England to the harsh deprivations of a German prisoner-of-war camp, and depicts a unique and crucial time in world history. Apple TV+ says Masters of the Air is “enormous in both scale and scope,” and cites the series as a “genuine cinematic achievement.”

“Masters of the Air is a salute to the brave men of the 8th Air Force, who, through their courage and brotherhood, helped defeat Nazi Germany in World War II,” said executive producer Goetzman. “Tom and Steven have always wanted to visualise cinematically what our author Don Miller has called, this ‘singular event in the history of warfare.’”

Apple TV+ dropped the first official trailer for Masters of the Air on Thursday (November 9), showing Butler and company take to the skies to “take the war to Hitler’s doorstep.”

The nine-episode limited series will premiere on Friday, January 26. It will be available to stream with a subscription to Apple TV+, which usually costs £8.99 a month after a seven-day free trial and includes access to hit shows like the new Godzilla spin-off Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and season three of Slow Horses.
