Fuelling a fire of hate

This weekend, millions of people will pay their respects to those who served our nation in times of war.

What should have been a time of reflection and remembrance has been overshadowed by an unseemly row over the policing of pro-Palestinian protests. Rather than seek to calm tensions, Suella Braverman has ignited them with her incendiary and misguided intervention.

The Home Secretary has trampled on police independence, given succour to the far-right and, for good measure, waded unnecessarily into the politics of Northern Ireland. By doing so, she has heightened the risk of violence and set back community relations.

Her motivation is not hard to fathom. Rather than take responsibility for the rise in knife crime and epidemic in shoplifting taking place on her watch, she is more interested in furthering her leadership ambitions.

Spineless Rishi Sunak should have sacked her for her previous inflammatory comments. Yet he is too pathetic to act, even when she has apparently broken the ministerial code, undermined the police and stoked hatred.

Care betrayal

This Government came to power vowing to end the crisis in social care. But a report out today reveals the situation is a bad as ever with nearly 430,000 people in England waiting for social care support, according to the National Audit Office.

Vacancies in the sector rose 173% in the past decade to 152,000 – one in 10 of all positions. Nearly one in five councils may not be able to afford to provide the care needed next year.

It makes no sense that the Department for Health and Social Care has failed to spend £1billion it received to reform the care system. Yet again, the Conservatives have betrayed the elderly and the vulnerable.

Choc tactics

Strike action could lead to a shortage of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
