Michael Vaughan says England's 2019 World Cup winners should be shunted towards the sunset in a “reset” of the white-ball squad.

But the former England captain and Ashes legend believes one-day coach Matthew Mott should survive any cull after the disastrous campaign in India.

Vaughan urged England's Dad's Army – who became a dud's army on a five-match losing streak which ended their defence of the trophy – to bequeath a farewell present for the next generation by securing a place at the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Skipper Jos Buttler's flops sign off against Pakistan in Kolkata on Saturday needing to finish in the top eight of the World Cup round-robin table to book a spot at the 50-over format's next global event in two years.

It is almost certainly the last time a core of ageing players will be seen together on one-day international duty, and Vaughan told the BBC's Test Match Special: “This team needs to be reset.

“Younger players need to come into it and there’s many of the old guys, the 2019 World Cup winners that will probably get moved on. But it’s their duty as a set of players in this World Cup, they’ve got to give the next generation a Champions Trophy in 2025.

“When you’re resetting and developing a team, you need that tournament mentality to test your skills, test players within it, test the different roles. It’s so important that this team wins on Saturday, gets to six points and gets into the Champions Trophy. It’s pivotal.”

The rebuild begins next month with a white-ball tour of the West Indies, and Vaughan expects a fresh roster of names to lead the charge.

He said: “We're not going to see a complete overhaul but many players are going to come in – the likes of Ben Duckett, Rehan Ahmed, Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Phil Salt....they deserve the chance that this team had in 2015.

“There was a four-year cycle where they stuck with a load of aggressive players and they played together for pretty much 80-odd games. They arrived in 2019 with fully defined roles and that’s what the next set needs.”

Despite England's woeful performances at the current World Cup, where Wednesday's 160-run against the Netherlands stopped the rot but barely papered over the cracks, Vaughan defended coach Mott, whose role has come under increasingly intense scrutiny.

“I’m not one for chopping and changing the coach,” insisted Vaughan. “He won a Twenty20 World Cup a year or so ago. I believe he must have methods that can get this England side playing well.

“He’ll probably be the first to admit that he made mistakes over the last few weeks, but everyone has made mistakes.

“If they had lost [against Holland] there would have been quite a strong debate about him carrying on so I’m pleased. Consistency in management is crucial.”
