As the holiday season quickly approaches, Al Roker is reflecting on a difficult last year admitting he felt like he "ruined Thanksgiving" after he "almost died."

In a clip from Your Mama's Kitchen, a podcast hosted by Michele Norris, the TV host opened up about his near-death experience he faced a year ago sharing that forced him to miss Thanksgiving. The 69-year-old Today co-host said that he "almost died" when he was hospitalised in November of last year.

During his guest appearance, Roker said: "I missed Thanksgiving, and almost missed Christmas," he added: "And I forgot how important those touchstone moments are.”

Roker confessed that the idea of being able to spend the holidays with his loved ones was one of the things that kept him going throughout his health battle. He said that cooking Christmas dinner for his family was "important to him" and gave him "something to push for."

The beloved TV personality was hospitalised due to blood clots that were found in both his legs and lungs. Last January he revealed that he needed to undergo a 7-hour-long surgery in order to "correct a bunch of internal stuff." Roker said that he didn't know how serious his health issues really were until he went to see doctors in the beginning of November to get to the bottom of his stomach pain.

After looking into his unexplainable pain, the father of three discovered a number of issues that forced him to be sent to the hospital twice. After undergoing surgery, it was discovered that Roker had two bleeding ulcers and needed to have his colon resectioned, gallbladder recovered, and an operation done on part of his small intestine.

Roker explained: "I had blood clots, which they think came up after I had COVID in September. And then I had this internal bleeding going on, I lost half my blood. They were trying to figure out where it was," he joked: "I went in for one operation, I got four free. So I got that going for me."

After his long-winded health battle, Roker has been able to reach almost a complete recovery. During his first reappearance on the Today show when asked whether "everything was fixed" he joked "As best we know" and added that he will need to have a "tuneup" annually and treatment for his knee after undergoing knee replacement surgery.
