Nicole Scherzinger led a star studded crowd in London’s Covent Garden on Tuesday night as she was given the honours of flicking the switch to turn on the Christmas lights in the capital.

The 45-year-old singer and actress dazzled in an off-the-shoulder white PVC dress complete with a dramatic ostrich feather cuff on the sleeve of her covered arm. The Pussycat Dolls legend had her hair pulled up in a tight ponytail and looked ecstatic as she joined Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing and his wife Sophie Habboo as they gathered on the balcony of the iconic Punch and Judy pub in the Covent Garden Piazza.

The London International Gospel Choir and the cast of SIX the Musical were also there to cheer on the exciting moment and watch Nicole as she counted down to the big turn on. The chart topping singer enthusiastically pushed a giant button and the crowds cheered as the lights in the historic London neighbourhood burst into life.

The 2023 Christmas lights in Covent Garden Market this winter are extra special as the design has been updated for the first time in 10 years. New decorations in the Market Building include 40 gigantic bells with bows, 12 giant baubles and eight spinning mirror balls.

While over in the Piazza, a 60-foot British grown Christmas tree is covered with 30,000 LED lights and more than 200 new giant gold baubles - with the plant towering high above the square. The festive event coincided with the State Opening of Parliament in London - with some in attendance noticing the coincidence.

One dazzled Christmas fan wrote on X: “Well, Parliament wasn't the only thing that was 're-launched' today. This evening also saw the big @CoventGardenLDN #ChristmasLights switch on, with Nicole Scherzinger!”

Nicole then dashed off down the street to the Savoy Theatre where she is currently wowing the West End with her performance in Jamie Lloyd’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard where she is playing the lead role, Norma Desmond. The Buttons singer has been landing rave reviews for the show which sees her character, a forgotten actress, go to extreme lengths to become relevant once more.

Nicole said she connected with the musical and was excited to take part. In an interview before the show opened, she explained that the ageism in Hollywood that the production takes aim at is alive and well. She told The Sunday Times: “It’s just as relevant today. And it’s still very brutal. Even if I look like I’m 37 or something, the moment somebody knows your age they will just —” she added, drawing a hand across her throat.

Discussing her initial reluctance to feature in the musical, she said: "I was like, ‘Are you out of your mind? First of all, I still look great under bright lights. And isn’t that an older woman who is, like, an old relic? How does that even remotely have anything to do with me?'" And added she took the job because: "It’s relevant to parallels in my life."

The show is running at the theatre - located beside London's iconic Savoy Hotel - until 6 January. The show has been praised by reviewers and theatre goers alike - with the production being called "dazzling" and Nicole's performance being hailed as "captivating".
