Coronation Street fans have been struggling to watch the devastating breakdown of Peter Barlow, as he hit rock bottom following the death of Stephen Reid.

Peter, played by Chris Gascoyne, was arrested by police after he knocked down Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) with his car as the serial killer attempted to murder Jenny Connor ( Sally Ann Matthews ). He insisted that he was simply trying to save Jenny from Stephen’s clutches, but the killer’s mum Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) tried to convince police that Peter’s actions were premeditated after Stephen drugged Carla.

Now, Peter is struggling to deal with the aftermath of his actions, and while Corrie boss Iain MacLeod confirmed the down-on-his-luck character would be tempted to find solace in the bottle once again, he confirmed that wouldn’t be the case. Chris is set to leave the soap for an extended break, meaning viewers could see him jailed for killing Stephen, and Iain insisted that they don’t want Peter to battle with alcoholism again.

“We were very clear when we started this chapter that we didn’t want him to fall off the wagon again so you won’t see that. We thought it was important that he, as a transplant recipient, didn’t drink again because we were worried about the messaging around that,” Iain explained. “But that does not mean that he won’t profoundly struggle psychologically with his demons.”

Over the coming weeks, Carla and Ken become concerned with Peter’s wellbeing, and both are terrified over the prospect of him drinking again. Searching the flat, Carla and Ken discover a bottle of whiskey is missing, but Peter explains he has been attending alcoholics’ anonymous meetings while she was at Underworld.

Earlier this year, Iain teased an “exciting few months” ahead for Corrie fans, as he explained there would be “wide-ranging consequences” to Stephen’s death. “With that, you need to know what the season 2 of the TV series is before you've written season 1. So in the grand tradition of sequels, I hope what you're about to see is the Godfather: Part Two, which is one of the best sequels ever. I'm confident we've nailed this - the consequences with crimes of this scale are inevitably going to be huge,” he shared.

Some fans have complained that Peter should avoid punishment after he killed a murderer, with many using the example of Anna Windass, who escaped jail after killing Pat Phelan. She was helped by Michelle Connor, and left Weatherfield after she realised she’d been let off the hook. With Chris taking an extended break from the soap, it may mean Peter will be jailed for manslaughter instead of murder.
