Robbie Williams and wife Ayda Field endured a number "dark break ups" on their path to happiness before a Hollywood A-lister intervened.

The Take That singer, 49, whose tell-all documentary drops on Netflix this week, shares four children with actress wife Ayda - who also starred on Loose Women and alongside him on The X Factor. Despite their seemingly close bond, things haven't always been smooth-sailing for Robbie and Ayda who split many times before finally settling down.

Ayda admits that she once had to give herself a rousing pep talk in order to stay with the troubled solo star. The pair eventually wed in 2010 after four years together, however they had actually broken up three times while they were dating.

Their tumultuous union got off to a rough start on the very night they met. Robbie told how he slept with his drug dealer the same evening he was introduced to Ayda. The American actress had "no idea" about the fling and admitted she found Robbie's living situation "quite sad" when she later learned the truth.

"My drug dealer had just left, I'd slept with her and she'd left me a bag of drugs," the dad recalled in You magazine. The US model said she wasn't aware Robbie had a drug problem to begin with, and it didn't interfere with the 'electricity' between them. She said: "It was like this silent language that was happening, this very strong emotional electric feeling where it was like breathing in air for the first time."

However, their initial spark wasn't enough to keep them together. Robbie broke up with Ayda three times, explaining he put the actress through "intermittent dumpings" because he was battling addiction issues at the time. He also admitted lying that he was going to rehab in a bid to break-up with his future wife the first time.

Opening up about the tearful phone call that initially ended their relationship, shortly before Robbie's 33rd birthday, Ayda tells the four-part Netflix series, Robbie Williams: "It was my entry into addiction," as she remembered the first time she'd seen the Angels star taking drugs.

"You wouldn't notice his personality change but all of a sudden he would throw up watching TV," she said while Robbie admitted he thought he would be better off dead when his addiction problems worsened. "There was a sense of... It would be better if I passed away, I didn't care and it would be alright," he said. "For me to change I'd need to be dying, die or stop what you're doing."

Going into more details about the heartbreaking phone call, Ayda said: "I remember it was 2am and I called him and I was like, 'I am just getting on the highway' and he's like, 'Are you driving? Call me when you get home.' "And he is like, 'I can't be in a relationship, I have to get better and I can't be with you. I have to break up with you."

Ayda continued: "And it was like, I understood it because I saw that he was unwell and I remember thinking, 'I just want you to get better.'" She also admitted she was "so crestfallen" adding: "He was my soulmate and then he was gone."

The actress also spoke about their relationship on their joint podcast At Home with the Williams, revealing: "You were in a dark place and did some dark things. Obviously my heart was broken many times, but we got over it. "By dark things you mean finishing with you three times," Robbie replied. Ayda admitted the worst part of Robbie's actions was that he didn't even bother to tell her she was being dumped.

She said: "It wasn't just finishing with me three times, it was more that when you finished with me you didn't tell me you were finishing with me, you just disappeared and then delivered my stuff in garbage bags." "I Houdini-ed you," Robbie quipped. Ayda added: "You Houdini-ed and then garbage bags came my way like three weeks later. And my car on a flatbed truck with a bill to pay the flatbed truck."

Everything changed for Robbie when he was given some wise words from Cameron Diaz at a showbiz party. He explained: "I bumped into Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. I started talking about this person I'd just ended a relationship with and was listing all these things about her brilliance when Cameron said 'I don't think it's over.'

"At that moment the universe spoke to me. I left and went straight to Ayda's house and committed to her." Back in 2018, Ayda shared how positive thinking helped her overcome her darkest moments. Asked by The Mirror if she had to “dig deep”, Ayda said: “God, in every single area of my life. In my relationship with Rob, when things were not going well, [I thought] ‘You can do this, you can get over this’.

“Every corner of my life, there’s an ‘I can’t’ then an ‘I can’ moment.” The couple now share four children; 10-year-old daughter Teddy, eight-year-old son Charlton, four-year-old daughter Coco, and three-year-old son Beau. Last year Ayda candidly commented her and sex life with Robbie was “completely dead”, adding they regard their bedroom as more of a “joint work space”.
