Multiple people have been shot at a homecoming event near a university after gunfire erupted in Texas.

At least seven people were left injured near Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, 47 miles west of Houston, including two victims who are aged between 8 and 13 years old, according to local media reports. It is estimated that more than 1,000 people were in attendance at the event. Helicopters were called to the scene and assisted in transporting the victims to the hospital. The conditions of the victims are unclear at this time.

“The mass gathering was approved by the County Judge for the location of FM 362 and Cameron Rd. The party promoter agreed to follow the Judge’s instructions. Please avoid the area of FM 362 to avoid traffic due to people organizing parking in the approved pastures,” a Facebook post on the Waller Co. Sheriff’s Office page read.

The "trail ride" event was not an official university gathering but had been approved by the County Judge. Officials were able to evacuate the eventgoers and establish a helicopter landing zone. It is unclear if anyone was killed following the shooting.

One eyewitness told KHOU 11 that a fight broke out followed by gunshots. "I was front row," witness Chelsee Prophet told the outlet. "They were fighting. After they got done fighting a girl got shot," she claimed. Police have yet to release any information on a possible suspect.

The shooting comes just days after a gunman fired twenty-two rounds into a group of children during a "sickening and unimaginable" drive-by shooting that killed a boy and injured four kids.

Dominic Davis was shot dead on Friday evening at around 9.30pm in Cincinnati after the driver of a sedan fired 22 rounds "in quick succession" into a crowd of children. A 53-year-old woman, who was next to the victim, was wounded, and three other boys aged, 12, 13, and 15; along with a 15-year-old girl. One victim remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Mayor Aftab Pureval labelled the shooting "sickening and unimaginable'" and said it happened in a neighbourhood next to a local park and near an elementary school. "Twenty-two rounds were fired," Pureval said. "Twenty-two rounds in a moment — into a crowd of kids. No time to respond. No time to react."

The mayor revealed the local community is suffering "unimaginable trauma" following the devastating shooting that has rocked the neighbourhood. Over the weekend, residents were "shouting messages of love and support to each other through open windows, but they were too wary to go outside".
