Springwatch star Chris Packham has launched a furious social media rant at Jeremy Clarkson after he said he “hated” Sir David Attenborough’s new Planet Earth series.

Clarkson laid into the hit BBC show, which airs on Sunday nights, blasting it for focusing too much on how climate change is affecting the world these days and less on the actual animals shown on screen.

He penned: “Like most people, I’ve been glued to the third series of Planet Earth. But unlike most people, I hate it. Oh the photography is brilliant. Spellbinding even. But the words are driving me insane.

“There used to be a time when Sir Attenborough would tell us all about the animals he’d found. Where it lived. How it mated. How it built a house. How it caught food. It was fascinating. But now all we ever get is: ‘Here’s see-through fish an orange stomach, and it’s future is threatened by climate change.’”

In a further dig at Sir David, outspoken Clarkson continued: “And then it’s ‘Here’s something with pointy teeth and soon it will be wiped out by global warming.’ We know already. So please, in future, tell us about the animals, not the bloody weather.”

But Clarkson’s comments in his latest column for The Sun over the weekend did not go down well with wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to call Clarkson out.

Branding him a ‘c***chafer’ and making reference to Clarkson’s infamous comments about Meghan Markle – which sparked thousands of complaints - Chris wrote: “Not content with fantasies of throwing s*** over members of the royal family, he now slams the world’s greatest broadcaster and the man who has done more than anyone has or ever will to protect life on earth... what a massive c***chafer.”

Fans were quick to comment in support of Sir David with one writing: “Oh Clarkson, of all the people to try and pick on. Attenborough won’t even raise an eyebrow.” Another said: “Sir Attenborough isn’t telling us about the ‘weather’, he’s telling us about the devastating impact of climate change on the world which we humans caused.”

A third fan commented: “Jeremy, a man full of himself. Sir David, a man full of the wonder of life”, as a fourth chimed in: “As if anyone would really listen to him compared to DA.” A fifth said: “That’s what happens when you think you’re better than you are. Clarkson’s ego walks through the door before he does. He’s not even in the same league as Sir David Attenborough.” While a sixth fumed: “Jeremy Clarkson isn’t fit to lick the soles of David Attenborough’s boots.”

It’s not the first time Clarkson has angered the public with his columns. Back in June, his comments about Meghan Markle – where he shared his hopes of the Duchess of Sussex being paraded naked in the street – was ruled as sexist by the press regulator and received huge backlash.

Over 25,000 people complained to IPSO (the Independent Press Standards Organisation) about the 'vile' article. IPSO chairman Lord Faulks said the imagery and descriptions were “humiliating and degrading towards the Duchess”.

In the controversial column in The Sun, Clarkson wrote that he was “dreaming of the day when [Meghan] is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her”.

He later explained he had compared his imagery to a gruesome scene in Game of Thrones but claimed he wrote the column “in a hurry” and forgot to mention the comparison to the popular TV show.

Prince Harry and Meghan accused Clarkson of spreading 'hate rhetoric' after the column went viral, with thousands of people slamming the former Top Gear star as a 'misogynist'. While both Clarkson and The Sun apologised for the column in December 2022, Ipso ruled the newspaper had broken its editors' code of practice as the piece contained a “pejorative and prejudicial reference” to Meghan's sex. However, the watchdog rejected complaints that the column was in any way discriminatory on the grounds of race, inaccurate or sought to harass the Duchess.
