Stone Roses' original bassist dies at 61 as Ian Brown leads tributes

The Stone Roses original bassist Pete Garner has died as Ian Brown leads tributes.

The 61-year-old was a school friend of frontman Ian and guitarist John Squire and was recruited when the band formed in 1983. He first stood in on bass in the pair's first group The Patrol three years earlier.

Speaking about Pete on twitter, the multi-instrumentalist wrote: "Very sad. We were young punk rockers when we met in 77. The nite before Petes maths and geography O levels we went to see the Clash. Always made me chuckle he did that and of course he made the right decision!

"Few loved music as much as Pete he been bathing in music since [Sex Pistols‘] Anarchy in the Uk came out that i can vouch for and Pete was off the scale nice, an old skool nice that ya just dont get no more! He got that from his lovely Mum! GOD Bless Pete RiP X”

The talented musician played on the band’s debut AA-side single So Young and also Tell Me' two years after they got together. He also appeared on hit song Sally Cinnamon, which was released in 1987.

He left the band soon after as he was replaced by Rob Hampson before long-term bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield took over at the end of 1987.
