Ryan Reynolds may be among the most famous football club owners - but the Hollywood star is nowhere near the richest.

Reynolds, 47, has been a Wrexham co-owner alongside fellow actor Rob McElhenney since collectively buying the club for £2.25million in November 2020. On the pitch, the club gained promotion back to the English Football League last season and are well-placed to push further up the pyramid from League Two this season.

Off the field, the ' Welcome to Wrexham ' documentary series has brought the club unprecedented global attention. While that will have been a welcome financial boost to the Welsh club and their owners, such riches cannot compare to some of the world's wealthiest individuals involved in the sport.

The presence of Peter Lim as part of the ownership group at League Two rivals Salford City means Wrexham are not even the richest club in their current division. As a billionaire investor - who also owns six-time Spanish champions Valencia - the Singaporean business magnate has an estimated net worth of £1.56billion and is the 1549th richest person in the world.

Comparatively, Reynolds has an estimated net worth of £288million. The additional around £50m that McElhenny brings to the table takes their combined net worth to £338m.

Looking up the pyramid, the gulf in finances becomes apparent, particularly in the Premier League. Newcastle United are the wealthiest club not only in the United Kingdom but the world following their 2021 takeover backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

According to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, PiF ranks sixth globally behind only Abu Dhabi, China (who have two of the top three), Kuwait and Norway. Their total assets are said to be an estimated £637bn. That figure does not include the individual wealth of PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben Brothers, who are also a part of the consortium. On the continent, Germany's RB Leipzig is exorbitantly wealthy from being owned by the energy drink conglomerate Red Bull.

Dietrich Mateschitz co-founded the company in 1984, and since his death last year, his son Mark has inherited the 49 per cent stake. He now has an estimated net worth of £27.8bn.

Over the border in France, a perhaps surprisingly well-off club are French team Rennes. While they regularly compete in European competitions, their performance belies that their de facto owner, François Pinault and family, are worth £25bn and rank 45th on Forbes' rich list.

Another Ligue 1 club in Nice, which currently leads the top flight, have comparable wealth thanks to being owned by INEOS and their CEO, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The prospective Manchester United minority investor is worth around £14.8bn. However, that total alone would not give the Old Trafford club bragging rights over their cross-city rivals. Manchester City majority owner Sheikh Mansour, the United Arab Emirates ' vice-president, has a net worth of over £17bn.
