The United States women's national team have agreed a record deal with Emma Hayes to become the new head coach, bringing her 11-year stay at Chelsea to an end.

After winning 15 trophies with Chelsea Women since 2012, Hayes has confirmed she will leave the club at the end of the Women's Super League season. Vlatko Andonovski resigned from his position as United States coach after their premature exit from the Women's World Cup, and U.S. Soccer has been on the hunt for a replacement ever since.

It appears they've secured one of the most respected coaches in women's football, and she will become the highest-paid female manager of all time. Her decision to leave Chelsea has shocked members of the team and also non-football staff, as Hayes disclosed the news in the dressing room after their 6-0 win against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Athletic reports that the offer from U.S. Soccer is record-breaking, but it's a huge blow for Chelsea as they see Hayes as a crucial part of their future plans. But, due to her commitment to Chelsea over the past 11 years they have supported her decision.

The club will also not seek compensation in return as she is completing the season with Chelsea. However, they still plan to keep her involved and want to explore ways she can help them grow while she is in the United States.

"Emma’s contribution to Chelsea cannot be understated," Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said.

"She has been a pioneer in women’s football and is hugely respected within the game. We look forward to continuing to work together over the coming months." Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley added: "Emma has been one of the biggest drivers of change in women’s football.

"Her achievements at Chelsea are unrivalled and will live in the club’s history forever. Given everything she has contributed to Chelsea in over a decade with the club, and the legacy she leaves behind, we would never stand in her way when she felt it was the right time to pursue a new challenge.

"We are pleased that she will remain with the club for the remainder of the season to give us the time to identify her successor. There will be plenty of time to celebrate Emma’s many achievements at the club and to give her the farewell she deserves, but for now, as she always has been, Emma will be solely focused on making this season as successful as possible for Chelsea."

Hayes will try to lead Chelsea to another Women's Super League title this season, and they're currently top with four wins in five games. Hayes has won six WSL titles, five Women’s FA Cups, two FA Women’s League Cups, one FA Women’s Spring Series trophy and one FA Women’s Community Shield during her time at the club.

Chelsea won the double on two occasions with Hayes, and also enjoyed a historic domestic treble. Hayes has already been inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame, and won The Best FIFA Football Coach award in 2021.
