A suspect is still at large after a shooting in Cincinnati left one person dead and five people injured.

The deceased victim is said to be a male, while children were among those also injured after the incident around 9.30pm yesterday. The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre said the man killed suffered three gunshot wounds - three of the other patients are critical but stable, according to spokeswoman Nanette Bentley.

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said shootings like this are happening "too often." The Gun Violence lists the incident as the 589 mass shooting in the US this year - four or more people must be shot for it to be classed as a mass shooting, according to the archive's methodology.

"This is happening too often," Chief Theetge said. "People are reverting to gun violence rather than resolving disputes in a humane manner. It is not humane to pull out a firearm and shoot individuals recklessly."

Gun violence continues to be a source of division and controversy in the US. Advocates for stricter gun control are pushing the banning of assault weapons and stronger background checks for people hoping to purchase a gun, while opponents say this will restrict their Second Amendment rights.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, at least 36,309 deaths related to gun violence have been recorded in the US this year alone. The data says 15,981 of the total deaths were due to homicide, defensive gun use, murder or were unintentional.

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said: "Tonight, there was a horrific tragedy in the West End. Children were shot. At least one life was lost. Our friends and neighbors are feeling unimaginable fear, trauma, and anger."

"Right now, I'm asking for your prayers. We will keep you updated as our officers continue their investigation. But I promise this: we will give everything we have to deliver justice against this sickening, heartless violence."

Mitch Morris, founder of the Save Our Youth − Kings & Queens anti-gun violence group in Cincinnati, said: "We cannot play multiple choice with what the solution is right now. We have to be laser-focused on our youth."

According to The Trace online map, Cincinnati experienced 1,191 between 2014 and 2022 alone. The incidents killed 662 and left 1,771 injured.

Shootings across the US over the weekend before Halloween have left at least 11 people dead and more than 70 injured, authorities said. The deaths between Friday and Sunday included two in Tampa, Florida, three in Texarkana, Texas, and two each in Dodge City, Kansas; San Antonio, Texas; and Mansfield, Ohio, according to police.
