A former Strictly Come Dancing pro has defended Adam Thomas after fans spot '"dig" at rival during dance-off.

Brendan Cole, who used to be a professional dancer on the show, has backed Adam after fans spotted him "not clapping" his rival. The 35-year-old found himself in the dance off last week where he went up against former Love Islander Zara McDermott.

However, eagle-eyed viewers weren't happy when they saw the actor standing with his arms folded while his pro dance partner Luba Mustuk clapped the performance. They also thought that they spotted Zara "turn her back on Adam" as she was sent home from the popular dance competition.

But, Brendan who was in 15 series of the programme has come to Adam's defence. Speaking to Sky Bingo, Brendan said: "I've very rarely seen people that don't support everybody and quite often in a situation like that, it’s about something else.

"It could have been just before his [Adam’s] number for example. He could have been right in the zone for his own routine and people shouldn’t underestimate how intense it can be before your number. You’ve worked so many hours on it and it’s such an important thing for you to stay in the competition. So quite often you are just in your own little zone, worrying about what you're about to do or even after you’ve danced worrying about something that you did wrong."

The 47-year-old added: "I don't think people should ever read into what they see backstage. Some people get on brilliantly, some people won't. But ultimately most people are just caring about themselves during showtime because it is such an epic, epic thing to try to succeed in."

Adam and Zara were in the dance off after the Halloween special of Strictly Come Dancing. Zara and her partner Graziano Di Prima were voted out unanimously by the judges.

Adam hasn't had the easiest time on the show as he's been dealt a series of blows when it comes to his health. Speaking about the nerve-racking damce-off, Adam told It Takes Two host Janette Manrara he had been "preparing for it". "I don’t know what it was, I was sort of preparing myself for it. I don’t know what it was about that night especially, I just felt like it was going to be our night to be in the dance off," he said on the Strictly spin-off.

"But nothing can prepare you for the dance off. It was so daunting and I was so nervous, but you’ve got to keep thinking, 'It’s just a dance show, go out there and do the same as you did in the first dance.'"

Adam admitted the positive feedback and score for his routine left him questioning why he had found himself in the dance-off. He said: "Getting amazing comments from the judges week on, week out, like it’s amazing but then it starts to play with you a little bit because you are getting great comments, you’re getting great scores, and you start to think, 'What am I doing wrong?' There’s only so much more I can do here."
