To get to the top takes 12 exciting minutes – and the views are spectacular. The birch trees lining the route are covered in snow, creating scenery worthy of a fairy tale as the lift takes us to one of Japan’s top ski spots in Niseko.

And as we climb up Mount Niseko Annupuri we get our first glimpse of Mount Yotei, the active volcano also known as Ezo Fuji for its resemblance to the famous landmark.

Some 30 years ago this part of the country was regarded among skiers and snowboarders as the world’s best-kept secret. With up to 14 metres of snow – 46ft – there is no need for snow guns with the natural stuff more than enough to guarantee spectacular conditions.

It was the Australians who first started to make noises about this part of Hokkaido island and slowly but surely the word spread.

Niseko is now among the most international ski resorts in the country. For sure, it is a long trek from Britain but for that dream holiday on powder, on and off piste, it is worth every hour. Besides, Crystal Ski Holidays does all the hard work for you with flights, transfers and accommodation included in the package with options for ski hire and lift passes also available.
