Video footage captures the shocking moment a school bus driver violently attacks a student as friends plead with him to stop.

The young boy, who attends Marrero Middle School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana was shoved and allegedly choked by the elderly driver on October 30. Mobile phone footage shows the driver, dressed in a black cap, shirt and hi-vis jacket, push the student while he is sitting down on the bus.

The victim appears to try and get up but the driver shockingly slaps the boy over the head. The child then seemingly shoves the driver, who responds by pinning the boy against the wall and allegedly choking him.

The video ends as the driver and student both walk towards the bus door at the front of the vehicle. During the footage, stunned students can be heard yelling at the driver. "Get off of him," one says. It is unclear at this stage what led up to the incident.

Miles Jenkins, 77, was arrested by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on Monday after a family member of the student contacted police, Fox 8 reports. Jenkins faces a battery charge and is now out on bond.

Jenkins was employed by First Student, one of the largest school bus contractors in the US, and resigned from his role on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the contractor told Fox8: "At First Student, we take our responsibility to provide a safe environment on our school buses very seriously. The interaction the driver had with the student was unacceptable. He has resigned. Given this is an active investigation, we are unable to comment further."

In a later statement the company added: "At First Student, we invest heavily in the comprehensive training and ongoing development of our drivers. They receive an average of 40 hours of training before operating a bus, which is more than double the federal requirement. Drivers also go through regular enhancement training during their tenure with the company. We monitor driver performance daily and conduct annual evaluations.”

Jefferson Parish Schools, who have an agreement with First Student to transport their students to and from schools, said in their own statement, as reported by Mail Online: "We are aware of an incident that occurred on Oct. 30 on the campus of Marrero Middle School between a First Student bus driver and a student.

"The bus driver is not a Jefferson Parish Schools employee. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and JP Schools will continue to facilitate a safe learning environment for all students and employees. We are cooperating with JPSO to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted."
