It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... retailers have started releasing their festive adverts.

Argos, Asda, Marks & Spencer, Very and Waitrose are the first major firms to bring out their much-anticipated commercials this year. And they've pulled out all the stops, with star-studded adverts and sparkly displays set to bring Christmas cheer to viewers.

Premiering on ITV yesterday evening, the Argos advert features characters Connie the doll and Trevor the toy T-rex. In a nod to the blockbuster hit Barbie film starring Margot Robbie, viewers will see Connie putting on a pink sequin jumpsuit, swishing her long blonde hair while dancing to the Chic song Le Freak on Christmas Eve.

Trevor is there to film the performance on his phone, as Connie passes Argos products such as a Sonos speaker and a Habitat Gold cocktail shaker Laura Boothby, head of campaigns at Argos, said: “There was no better way to show off what you can find at Argos this Christmas than bringing back our loveable and family-friendly characters Connie and Trevor. Fans of the Argos ad will be able to also view TikTok films, which the firm says will show Connie and Trevor like never before."

Meanwhile, like the 2022 offering, this year's Asda commercial features a famous face. Singer Michael Bublé is the star of the show, as revealed in a 60-second teaser that was shown on This Morning yesterday. As Asda workers are getting their stores ready for Christmas, revealing products consumers can expect to see on the shelves this year, they open a door to reveal the Canadian crooner.

Buble then belts out the opening line from It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas. David Hills, Asda's chief customer officer said: "At Asda, we absolutely love Christmas and this year we're once again on a mission to bring that warm, festive feeling to households across the UK.

"With Bublé's undeniable ability to spread seasonal smiles and our commitment to quality, at great value, we're a match made in heaven, proving Asda is a one-stop-shop for families seeking magic this Christmas."

The full 90-second Asda advert, directed by Rita Ora's husband, Oscar-winning New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, is coming out on Saturday (November 4).

Finally, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, actresses Zawe Ashton and Hannah Waddingham and TV star Tan France all feature in the M&S ad for the firm's clothing and home sections. Soundtracked to a cover of Meatloaf's I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) by Ray BLK, it shows the celebrities having to do various tasks, such as Waddingham making a kid's costume for a school production and Ellis-Bextor casting her eye over a stack of unwritten Christmas cards.

Called Love Thismas (Not Thatmas), M&S say the ad celebrates the honest truth of Christmas, where we have to strike the balance between doing things we want to do, and doing things we have to do. Anna Braithwaite, M&S clothing & home marketing director, said: “I’m sure everyone watching our ad will be able to relate to our fabulous cast of talent who so hilariously bring-to-life those little moments and dilemmas we all have at Christmas time."

This year, Very has unveiled its new platform Let’s Make it Sparkle by releasing a very joyful Christmas advert. The advert highlights the magic of Christmas, showing a team of flamingos Kerry, Terry and Cherry travelling a dull cityscape, livening it up delivering Very packages to pigeons.

The flamingos’ home then becomes covered in pink glitter and is transformed with vibrant gifts from the online store, a Christmas tree and decorations. It's soundtracked by a reworked version of the Girls Aloud cover of Slade's Merry Christmas, Everybody.

Jessica Myers, chief marketing Officer at Very, said: “We know Very customers are as imaginative and enthusiastic about everyday moments as they are about Christmas, and we want to celebrate and enable that sense of joy and fun all year round as part of our commitment to our purpose; helping families get more out of life."

Soundtracked to Depeche Mode's Just Can’t Get Enough, Waitrose's 90-second ad is a celebration of the "good stuff" according to the firm. The clip focuses on a Christmas party where things go slightly awry, but no one notices because the food and drink is really good.

It centres around various Christmas moments such as guests arriving too early, people getting locked in a bathroom and a power cut. Graham Norton also makes a cameo, bringing Waitrose's No.1 Golden Bûche de Noël to the party. The star said: “What a treat it was to be invited to such a fun party and to feature in this joyful Christmas campaign with Waitrose."
