'Killing must halt and help be allowed in to two million Palestinians trapped'

The relatively few injured and foreign nationals allowed to escape the hell of Gaza through the Rafah crossing into Egypt is a chink of light.

But the future remains dark for more than two million Palestinians trapped in the devastated strip of land. Without a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and a surge of humanitarian aid in place of the tiny trickle permitted, the suffering and loss of life will shame those who are condoning the killing of so many civilians.

Hamas is Israel’s enemy but it is ordinary Palestinians, including thousands of women and children, who are the main victims. What Hamas did on October 7, butchering 1,400 Israelis and seizing more than 200 hostages, was a war crime. So too is taking the lives of many more Palestinians. For the chink of light to shine brighter, the killing must halt and help be allowed in.

Full of hot air

Boris Johnson asking our leading scientists if you could kill Covid-19 by blowing a hairdryer up your nose was his Donald Trump “disinfectant” moment. Trump was rightly mocked for suggesting that injecting the household cleaner could save victims from the pandemic and foolish Johnson deserves the same for giving credence to a crank theory after watching it on YouTube.

The more we learn during the Covid Inquiry about the stewardship of a liar who sold Brexit to the nation, the more we discover that Johnson was completely off the wall. A lazy and chaotic figure overseeing a toxic No10 culture who worsened the crisis. Grieving families are entitled to feel furious and the country must ask itself why it put this charlatan into power.

Xmas ad-vent

The debut screenings of the big chain stores’ TV adverts mean it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. But, it would be nice to enjoy Bonfire Night before worrying about buying presents.
