Man City provide update after Alex Greenwood suffers head injury

Manchester City have released an update on Alex Greenwood's condition following the head injury she sustained while on England duty.

Greenwood, 30, was stretchered off during the Lionesses 3-2 defeat in Belgium after suffering a nasty clash of heads with Belgium forward Jassina Blom. Blom returned to the action wearing a bandage, but Greenwood was treated for almost 12 minutes by England medical staff and required oxygen on the pitch.

The defender eventually departed on a stretcher. Positive news came at full-time when it was confirmed Greenwood was talking and walking around the stadium in Leuven.

City have now issued a public statement on her condition following the incident, stating she will undergo further monitoring when back at the club.

The statement posted online read: "Alex Greenwood will return to the City Football Academy for further medical assessments after sustaining a head injury on international duty.

"The defender was involved in a clash of heads during England’s UEFA Nations League fixture with Belgium on Tuesday evening. We can confirm she has been carefully monitored, is alert and well and will return home later today ahead of a review with our medical team."

Greenwood was involved in a collision with Blom while ducking to head the ball midway through the first half of t he Nations League tie, which England eventually lost thanks to a late Tessa Wullaert penalty.

After a lengthy delay, the Man City defender was carried off the pitch on a stretcher to a warm round of applause from the fans inside the Den Dreef stadium in Belgium, which included 700 from England. She was conscious as she left the pitch, squeezing the hands of her team-mates Millie Bright and Georgia Stanway.

And she was later reported to be fully responsive, talking and being monitored by the team's medical staff. Greenwood was one of the stars at the Women's World Cup over the summer, helping England reach the final where they eventually lost 1-0 to Spain.

Man City travel to Arsenal in a huge WSL clash on Sunday. But given the protocol around concussion injuries, it is unlikely Greenwood will feature.
