Matthew Perry has died at the age of 54, with famous friends and fans paying tribute to the late star.

Tonight, the cast of Friends said they were "utterly devastated" by the death of their co-star Matthew Perry. In a statement released to People magazine on Monday, his former co-stars said: "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew.

"We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

They added: "In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty's family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

Matthew will be remembered for starring in one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, alongside co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow. It's been reported the Friends stars are "reeling" from the death of their beloved pal and feel like they've "lost a brother".

Tributes have been pouring in for Matthew, with The View star Whoopi Goldberg breaking down live on air as she admitted she was "heartbroken". She said: "You know, we were all beyond heartbroken," , before pausing to regain her composure as her voice broke. "To hear about the sudden passing of Matthew Perry." Addressing viewers of the show, she continued: "He was just 54 years old and we were very lucky to have him here last year when he was really open about overcoming his struggles with addiction, and he was really passionate about helping other people get through it."

Matthew will also be known for his brave and honest account of battling numerous addictions at the height of his fame. Speaking in his autobiography last year, Perry revealed he almost died numerous times and spent millions of dollars in a desperate bid to stay clean. Matthew once said he could never watch Friends because he could tell what substance he was using at the time of filming.

"But I think I'm going to start to watch it because it's been an incredible thing to watch it touch the hearts of different generations," he added in what became one of his final interviews.

Warner Bros TV, which produced Friends, confirmed news of the star's death on Saturday night, telling the world: 'We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry.'

"Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family," the statement read. "The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans."

An investigation is now underway into Matthew's death, with no indication of foul play and no drugs found at the scene of his death.

Lisa Kudrow revealed her Friends co-star and long-time pal Matthew Perry "survived impossible odds" before his tragic death over the weekend.

Well before the devastating news of Matthew's death was announced, the actress wrote about her friendship with Matthew and his serious battle with addiction. In her forward for her co-star's memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing she wrote how she felt and responded to the frequent question: "How's Matthew Perry doing?"

She wrote: "Over the many years since I was first asked, it's been, at different times, the most asked question for me. I understand why so many people asked it: they love Matthew and they want him to be OK," she added: "Me too."

Friends creator spoke to 'chipper' Matthew Perry weeks before death

The creator of Friends has revealed she spoke to Matthew Perry just two weeks before his death - saying he was "chipper" and "in a good place".

The famous actor was most well-known for playing his beloved character Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends. Now, creators of the hit show Marta Kauffman and David Crane have spoken out about the last conversation they had with Perry.

Matthew Perry 'active in Alcoholics Anonymous' before his death

A source has claimed Matthew Perry was sober and very active in his Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program in the lead up to his death.

A member of the group said he seemed to be "doing well" before he was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Saturday. Matthew is said to have been attending meetings and working with a handful of newcomers.

"He had a sponsor and was a sponsor. He seemed to be doing well," the source told Daily Mail.

Matthew's memoir becomes #1 bestseller again

Following Matthew’s heartbreaking death over the weekend, the late actor’s 2022 memoir has shot back up the bestseller charts on Amazon. Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing, Matthew’s honest and humour account of his life and addiction battles, has become the #1 book on Amazon, replacing Britney Spears’ autobiography The Woman In Me.

In his raw memoir, Matthew revealed to readers that he once spent weeks in a coma during the height of his addiction battles. The late star detailed just how close he came to dying as he struggled with drug and alcohol and recalled his family being told he only had a 2% chance of pulling through, after overusing opioids caused the actor's colon to burst when he was aged 49.

Matthew explained in the book how he had to use a colostomy bag for nine months following the near-death experience and underwent a total of 14 surgeries on his stomach - alongside 15 trips to rehab in a bid to get sober and manage his addictions.

Lisa Kudrow wished she could do more to help Matthew Perry

Lisa Kudrow once said that she had "periods of wondering" if she "was wrong for not doing more" to help her former co-star and pal Matthew Perry with his addiction.

The actress penned the foreword for Matthew's memoir last year and began by stating that "the most asked question" to her over the years had been: "How's Matthew Perry doing?" Lisa said she was aware people "love" him and wanted him to be okay, adding that she felt the same.

Lisa then shared with readers that she hadn't wanted to speak for him and that at times she wasn't sure herself how he was doing. Lisa went on to write about how it took time for him to open up about some of his experiences.

She continued by sharing in the memoir: "Over those years I didn't really try to intervene or confront him, because the little I knew about addiction was that his sobriety was out of my hands. Matthew’s fans have taken to social media in the wake of his death to suggest those mourning the late actor use his work on the show Friends as inspiration for their Halloween costumes this year.

Writing on Twitter, also known as X, one mourning fan shared a snap of Matthew’s character Chandler in a pink bunny costume and suggested: “In loving memory of Matthew Perry, It would be awesome if people dressed up as a pink bunny for Halloween tomorrow.” The post currently has over 30,000 likes, with replies suggesting other Chandler costume ideas.

Chandler’s costume was from the episode The One with the Halloween Party, where Monica buys her husband a pink bunny costume at the last minute as he loved the book The Velveteen Rabbit as a child - something Chandler wasn’t too happy about.

"It was either a pink bunny, or no bunny at all,” Monica tells him when he feels uncomfortable about the pink get-up, to which Chandler quips back with: "No bunny at all. Always no bunny at all!"
