Vernon Kay jets off on Venice holiday with daughter as wife Tess stays at home

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay had a "tremendous" half-term break in Venice with his youngest daughter Amber. This comes despite the news that his BBC Radio 2 slot's ratings have dropped by 1.3 million compared to when Ken Bruce was hosting.

While his wife Tess Daly, who presents Strictly Come Dancing, and their older daughter Phoebe stayed at home, the 49 year old shared some snaps of the trip with his 777,000 Instagram followers. However, in keeping with the couple's policy of protecting their children from the public eye, he ensured that Amber wasn't included in the photos and instead showed off the stunning scenery.

"A tremendous half term in Venice with Amber," he wrote. "What a city. So much to see, learn and do. "Listening to Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the church it was composed, Watching The Barber of Seville in an old Palace and eating a tonne of Carbs for the @bbccin run. Back @bbcradio2 Monday! P.S Guess the movie location in the first pic...!!??"

Vernon is currently in training to run 115 miles in just four days to raise money for the BBC's annual Children In Need fundraiser. Last month, he appeared on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 to explain the ULTRA Ultramarathon Challenge. He will run marathons and ultramarathons across four days to get him from Victoria Park in Leicester, to Bolton Wanderers' football stadium in his hometown.

Opening up on a health issue that could compromise his efforts he told Zoe: "I'll accept it, but I know my sciatica is absolutely howling laughing right now. I'm trying to take it all in because when it was suggested, I said, 'I don't want to do 24 hours'," he said. This refers to his colleagues who have taken on 24-hour challenges for the charity, such as Scott Mills, Rylan Clark and weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans.

Vernon stepped into Ken Bruce's Radio 2 slot in May this year, following the veteran broadcaster's move to Greatest Hits Radio after a 30-year stint with the BBC. Despite a dip in figures, Vernon continues to attract a large audience, with a whopping 6.9 million listeners tuning in, as per radio rating body Rajar.
