NEC Nijmegen star Bas Dost has told fans "I feel good" after being rushed to hospital following his collapse on the field on Sunday.

In harrowing scenes, Dost was surging forward late on as the visitors led AZ Alkmaar 2-1, but fell to the ground inside the centre circle. Play initially continued before referee Jeroen Manschot halted proceedings, having spotted that Dost had remained grounded.

Medical staff quickly rushed to his side, as did players of both teams. And some were seen praying as they linked arms and formed a shield around the 34-year-old to ensure he could be treated in private.

The striker did thankfully regain consciousness before he was carried off the field. And his departure was greeted by a standing ovation from fans, with his club later posting on social media: "Bas Dost is conscious and is taken off the field. The match has been stopped."

And Nijmegen later posted a further update, with the ex-Dutch international pictured siting up in his hospital bed and giving a thumbs up: “I'm doing well," he was quoted as saying.

Acknowledging the work of emergency staff, he added: "The help I received on the field was fantastic. I'm in the hospital now and I feel good. Thanks for all the support!”

Alkmaar's official club account has responded to the update on Dost, reposting his picture with a praying hands emoji. In a separate post, they wrote: "Bas Dost is fortunately conscious. Wishing you a lot of recovery and strength, Bas."

Following Dost's collapse, play never restarted at the AFAS Stadion. Alkmaar had kicked off the game in second place, and now lie five points off leaders PSV Eindhoven. Nijmegen, meanwhile, remain 12th as both clubs wait for the outcome of their meeting to be confirmed.

Dost joined his current club from Utrecht in the summer. He's been capped 18 times by Holland, his only goal coming away to Wales back in November 2015.
