Huge medical breakthrough 'could ease arthritis pain for millions of Brits'

Millions of arthritis sufferers could finally see their extreme pain from the condition eased after a breakthrough from scientists.

Just one dose of the advanced medicine can provide pain relief with new nanoparticles found to be effective for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, say researchers in Korea who have seen successful trials with lab mice. It means up to half a million people across the UK can look forward to less stiffness and swelling in their joints.

Study first author Dr Sagang Koo explained: "The disease triggers a mix of troublesome symptoms like inflamed joints, harmful cytokines, and immune system imbalances, which work together to create a relentless cycle of worsening symptoms. While targeting some of these factors can provide short-term relief, others remain unresolved, leading to a frustrating cycle of remission and flare-ups."

The expert said one of the biggest problems researchers struggle with is trying to restore the immune system to its healthy state. This is because it can leave the body unable to control the production of dangerous substances that can cause persistent inflammation and discomfort.

New treatment that involved putting a type of nanoparticle onto specific nanovesicles was able to ‘comprehensively treat’ and prevent arthritis by restoring T cell immunity. Dr Koo reckons that a similar approach could be used with other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases too.

She said: "Overall, this study proves the potential of a hybrid nanoparticle system for the comprehensive treatment of autoimmune disease and modulation of the immune system. This clearly demonstrates the synergy between anti-inflammation and immunomodulation and underlines the importance of the combined therapy for effective RA treatment. In addition, Ce-MSCNV administration prior to booster injection markedly reduced the incidence and severity of symptoms, supporting the prophylactic potential of these nanoparticles."
