Hero cabin crew raced to the rescue after a passenger's laptop set itself on fire mid-air.

Shocking footage has emerged of the aircraft panic after flames were seen on board a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany.

The Boxing Day trip took a very concerning turn as the attendants were forced into action hours into the journey.

The incident occurred on board Lufthansa flight LH457 and a clip showed the smoke starting to fill the cabin as worried travellers shouted.

A female team member then quickly opens the overhead locker where the laptop is stored.

She sprayed a fire extinguisher, putting out the blaze, as panicked passengers watch on.

Two members of the cabin crew were treated for smoke inhalation after the plane was eventually forced to land at Chicago O'Hare airport.

Although initial reports suggested it was an emergency landing, a Lufthansa spokesperson said the pilots decided to change course as a "precautionary measure", and that the blaze was already extinguished.

The clip was uploaded to Instagram by travel account aflyguytravels.

The caption read: "A Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 operating from Los Angeles to Frankfurt, Germany, was forced to land in Chicago after a laptop caught fire in the overhead bin on a flight last Monday.

"In a video posted by a passenger, the cabin crew can be seen putting their firefighting training into action to prevent the fire from spreading.

"For those that think Flight Attendants are there to just serve your food and drinks, please bookmark this video and remember to respect the crews' safety instructions, they're meant to keep you safe and alive during your time in the sky."

The airline also stressed that safety on board the plane "was not compromised" and said they were helping passengers rebook flights.

In a statement, Lufthansa said: "Lufthansa flight LH457 from Los Angeles to Frankfurt made an unscheduled landing to Chicago O'Hare Airport on Monday as a precautionary measure.

"The reason was a small fire onboard the cabin caused by a passenger's overheated laptop. The small fire was extinguished in flight before its safe landing.

"Safety on board was not compromised at any time. None of the passengers onboard were injured. Two flight attendants were treated onsite for smoke inhalation.
