Netflix about to add 'year's best horror movie' just in time for Halloween

Netflix is all set to add the year's top horror flick - just in time for Halloween.

UK subscribers are in for a spectacularly spooky surprise as the film, released only a few months ago, will soon be available for home viewing. Talk To Me is an Aussie horror that quickly became a box office sensation largely through word-of-mouth. Directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, the movie went on to rake in a cool £74m worldwide off a budget of just £3.7m.

The story centres around a group of mates who become obsessed with summoning spirits using a very creepy-looking embalmed hand. What could possibly go wrong? A lot, as it happens, with one party member (Sophie Wilde) releasing some terrifying forces after one particularly ill-fated seance. This is steadfastly NOT a film for the faint-hearted!

This neat and incredibly nasty picture received an avalanche of positive reviews, with Damon Wise of Deadline Hollywood saying it "attempts to do something new with an old idea". An equally impressed Chris Bumbray from JoBlo likened it to The Exorcist, adding that Bird's portrayal of a 'possessed' character is the best seen on screen since Linda Blair in William Friedkin's 1973 classic.

Chuck Bowen from Slant Magazine said: "the film's major achievement is how it manages to ground possession in the reality of modern teenage life". While Mike Muncer, host of Evolution of Horror on Letterboxd, called it "my favourite horror film of 2023 so far". Fellow Letterboxd reviewer Andrew Pope added: "When you know where it's going it's horrifically, soul-destroyingly bleak. The kinda movie where you won't want to go to bed straight away". He also praised the climax as "an all-timer horror movie ending".

With a healthy 7.2 on IMDB, readers were equally as enamoured with Talk To Me. Ethanbresnett posted how it was one of the best horror films he'd seen in a while. He said: "Talk to Me is a stone cold classic of the horror genre. It feels fresh, thrilling, absorbing, and has a brilliant concept at its core". Elsewhere, MarkWalter praised its macabre atmosphere and liked it to an 'Exorcist for the 21st Century'. Kosmasp said "The horror is quite frightening - the story is tight and the ending ... well that has quite the impact to it. And even if you may see it coming ... it is so well shot and done, it won't matter."

The cast of Talk To Me also includes Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen.

Talk To Me lands on Netflix UK from Thursday (October 26).
