Google Chrome is introducing a new 'IP Protection' tool

Google Chrome users will soon have one less privacy risk to worry about, thanks to a major new security update.

Google is reportedly set to introduce an 'IP Protection' tool on Google Chrome. This is designed to conceal users' IP addresses in order to reduce the risk of them being tracked across the web by advertisers and fraudsters.

The feature will initially be optional and available only to US-based users of Google Chrome. If testing goes well, you can expect it to come to your browser through an update in the near future.

Every Internet user has a unique IP address which acts as an identifier and marker as you browse the web. There are existing services, such as VPNs, which are able to conceal this address by bouncing your online activity through a number of different servers. Google's IP Protection feature will work in a similar way by masking your web activity through proxy servers owned by both Google and a third party.

This means private information like your location, browsing activity and more will get a much stronger layer of protection from prying eyes.

However, there is some concern about whether Google—which has been criticised in the past for privacy shortcomings—will be able to effectively implement the feature.

If you can't wait long enough for the update to be released outside of the US, you may want to consider using a VPN.

Software such as NordVPN costs a few pounds a month but can almost completely anonymise your web activity as well as protect you from trackers, ads, and malware. Other services offer other features and competitive pricing so it's worth shopping around.
